The Vintage Shoppe
Who's heard of the Ribera del Guadina region in Spain?  This newly classified area in Extremadura (south-western Spain on the border of Portugal) is similar to the Vin de Pays zones of France. Until recently, Extremadura produced Spain's bulk table wines (Vino de la Tierra), but in 1999 the finest sub-zones were combined to make up the new higher-quality DO known as Ribera del Guadiana. These days you can expect excellent value from the most humble areas.

Payva 2009 was dropped off by our salesman to taste. We didn't have the highest expectations at first, but with just one sip we knew we had a winner. The remote and unacclaimed areas are full of treasures!  The wine is full-bodied & dry, with ripe red fruit and floral notes on the nose with a saturated color in the glass. On the palate the black fruit is concentrated and lush and punctuated with sweet tannins and pleasant acidity. Pair with grilled and BBQ meat.
