Wine production began in Morocco 2500 years ago with the Carthaginians. Morocco is the 30th largest wine producing country in the world, and that is not bad considering in modern times 98 percent of population is Muslim and forbidden to purchase alcohol. France occupied Morocco from 1912-1956 when they exported over a half million cases of bulk wine annually from Morocco to France. Since 1957, France made it illegal for French producers to blend Moroccan wine into theirs, but rumor has it that the practice still continues when French producers need the “medicine” Moroccan wines provide to improve their product in under ripe vintages. That must be why there is something so “je ne sais quoi” and “déjà vu” about these delicious and affordable selections from Morocco.
