High elevation vineyards are prized by winemakers because grapevines that struggle for survival in extreme climates to produce grapes with tremendous character and complexity. "Vines must suffer in order to produce great art." Well, this delicious white wine from the Salta region of Mendoza, Argentina, is made with grapes grown in vineyards 5,500 feet above sea level in the foothills of the Andes (the highest vineyard in Napa is at 2,200 feet). This Torrontes has the full-body and texture of a Chardonnay coupled with the refreshing crispness of a Sauvignon Blanc, which makes it ideal as a thirst quenching summertime aperitif or paired with a wide variety of foods, particularly anything off the grill. It has a floral nose, and offers intense tangerine, nectarine and pineapple fruit flavors with an elegant and clean finish. We love everything about this wine including the regal bottle which looks like it costs $30 or more.
