Pinot Grigio is a refreshing and crowd pleasing white wine that is perfect for summer.  When we think of Pinot Grigio, most of us think of Italy, maybe Alsace, but who knew about Germany?  Pinot Grigio is called Pinot Gris in Germany and Alsace, and it tends to have more concentrated fruit and a more viscous mouthfeel than your average Pinot Grigio from Italy.

This 2006 Heger Pinot Gris is from the Baden region in Southwest Germany, just across the Rhine River from the heart of Alsace.  The most famous district in Baden is the Kaiserstuhl (pictured above) which means "emperor's chair" because of the group of volcanic hills that distinguish the area.  It boasts of the warmest climate in Germany and excellent soil to grow anything including 30 species of orchids.

The wine is rich with excellent texture that is nicely balanced by soft and refreshing acidity.  The fruit is a pleasant combination of pineapple, orange and grapefruit.  Also, at half the price of an equivalent Pinot Gris from Alsace, this wine is a great value that everyone ought to try!
