Valdicava

Whenever I am asked "What's the best wine in your shop?" I reflect about the first time I tried Valdicava's Brunello Riserva and give it as my answer.  What makes Valdicava so great?  Most attribute its success to owner Vincenzo Abruzzese who would rather produce a tiny amount of truly great wine or none at all.  His estate and total wine production are miniscule compared to other well known producers of Brunello.  Castello Banfi, for example, farms 2,400 acres of vineyard land, grows 8 different grapes, produces 30 different wines, and makes roughly 6000 cases of their Brunello Riserva.  Valdicava farms 25 acres, only grows the Sangiovese grape, makes 3 wines, and the total production of the 2003 Brunello Riserva was 1100 cases.   It is Valdicava's size and commitment to the highest quality possible that makes it so special!  So here are two wines from Valdicava that we highly recommend you try.

Valdicava Rosso
   2006 Valdicava Rosso di Montalcino
Generally, Rosso di Montalcino is called "Baby Brunello" because it is made from vines that are too young to meet Brunello's 10 year minimum age law to be called "Brunello."  However, that is not the case at Valdicava.  All Valdicava grapes are grown on vines that are over ten years of age, most are 30-40 years old, so every bottle of wine they make could legally be labeled "Brunello" like it was in 2001.

Valdicava Madonna
This is Valdicava's flagship, single vineyard Brunello Riserva.  We have sold every vintage produced from this vineyard since 1995, but it has never been priced under $170.  So although it is a special occasion wine by most of our standards, this is a great opportunity to try one of the World's greatest wine treasures!
