Hi Everyone!
So we made it through the all the hubbub of Thanksgiving, ideally reasonably unscathed. I hope all of you had the most joyful, and perhaps reasonably healthy holiday in recent years.
And now we come into a brand new program, being launched this week. I know for some of you there is excitement, and for some dread. I chose the photo above because it is a fall image, but also because it is an image of mystery. What is it we are looking at? Mist over water...serene and shrouded in secret. That is what this new chapter brings right now...mysterious hints but its all pretty foggy. Well, fear not...This week the fog will clear and you will know all there is to know about the best Weight Watchers program to ever come down the pike.
I really look forward to seeing y'all in the meeting rooms this week and teaching you this wonderful program. I know some of you have waited until now to return. It is worth coming back for...I promise! See you there! |

MEETING TOPICS: WEEKS OF November 28 & December 5, 2010
The week of November 28th is finally the week of the
NEW PROGRAM!!!!!
Finally after weeks of teasers and hints we will be opening the doors to an entirely new way of doing the program. I know some of you will cringe at change, but trust me when I say there could not be a better, easier or more fun path to losing weight and getting healthy!
And the week of December 5th we will delve more deeply into the POINTS PLUS VALUES
I suspect the first reaction many of you will have to the new program is that of mistrust...How can that possibly work?? So this meeting is designed to go a bit deeper into the science, and just familiarize ourselves with this radical new way of counting. |

RECIPES FOR THIS ISSUE
Hopefully we can move out of the turkey zone for awhile and take advantage of the other awesome foods around this time of year. One of my favorites is CRAB!! So so low in points and since we live in crab country, so so fresh! Here is the wonderful Crab Cioppino recipe from my website, as well as a delicious sounding Crab Cake recipe which is quite reasonable in points as well.
I have done the math on both recipes to reflect the new points plus values. Enjoy!!

CRAB & SHRIMP CIOPPINO
Ingredients:
1 sweet yellow onion, chopped 1 full head of garlic (i.e. LOTS of garlic), chopped 1/8 cup finely chopped fresh basil 2 jars fat-free marinara sauce (Trader Joes has a great one) 1 bottle clam juice 1 cup fat free chicken or vegetable broth 1 12oz can fire roasted tomatoes, or diced tomatoes salt and pepper to taste 2 tsp oregano 1 bag frozen, uncooked shrimp (tail-on is generally what you'll find... I get it at Costco or TJs) 1 crab, cleaned, all meat picked out (appox 11/4 - 11/2 cups of crab meat). You can also leave the crab in the shell, as pictured above, and break into chunks.
Directions:
Spray a large soup pot with spray oil and saute the onion, garlic and basil until translucent. Add the marinara sauce, clam juice, broth, tomatoes, and rest of spices and cook on medium heat for 10 minutes unitl gently boiling. Add frozen shrimp and let cook for 10 minutes. Add crab and let cook for 5 more minutes.
Serve with a large salad, and some grated parmesan cheese over the top.
Makes 8 servings. 4 points per serving.
CRAB CAKES Ingredients:
3 whole canned water chestnuts (1/4 cup minced, if omiting add an extra 1/4 cup minced onion) (optional)
1/2 small onion (1/4 cup minced)
2 garlic cloves (1 tsp minced)
12 oz lump crabmeat
1/4 cup soft breadcrumbs
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1/4 teaspoon dark sesame oil or 1/4 teaspoon olive oil
1/4 teaspoon Worcesteshire Sauce
1 tablespoon egg white or egg substitute
3 tablespoons reduced-calorie mayonnaise
salt and pepper to taste
1/8 teaspoon blackening seasoning (optional)
1 pinch cayenne pepper (optional)
vegetable oil cooking spray
Directions: If the first three ingredients aren?t already minced, throw them in your food processor for a moment or mince them by hand.
Combine all ingredients except the cooking spray in a medeum mixing bowl; stir well. Shape into 8 patties.
Coat a large skillet with cooking spray; place over medium heat until hot. Add crabmeat patties, and cook 6 to 8 minutes or until lightly browned on both sides, turning once. Transfer to a serving platter.
Makes 8 crab cakes 2 pts each

PRODUCT SUGGESTION

(The jar pictured is not the name of the product...it used to be called this, but they changed it. However the size and color are the same)
TRADER JOE'S RED PEPPER SPREAD WITH EGGPLANT AND GARLIC
So you've got all that leftover turkey and your first instinct is to make sandwiches loaded with mayonnaise. How about trying this instead. This spread, based on Macedonian recipe, is very flavorful, a bit spicy, and can be used not only as a sandwich spread, but as a base for soups, stews and vegetable dishes. Delish!!

WHAT THE HOLIDAY COOKED SAMPLED...
Two different members brought in a terrific article from Cooking Light Magazine on the amount of calories consumed BEFORE the holiday meal is even on the table. Just a few of those croutons for the stuffing couldn't hurt, right? And how many points could a few cranberries be? Oh, and geez, I have been cooking all day...just a little wine to relax as I continue...You get the picture.

REDUCE WAIST
My boyfriend handed me an article from Mens Health Magazine last week, which stated that in a study at Cornell University people who ate from paper/styrafoam plates and plastic utensils tended to consider their food more of a snack than a meal. Though they typically took in 116 calories less in their meal than the "real meal" folks in the study, they were more likely to have another meal later. To feel like the food you eat is substantial eat from real plates with real silverware. What a great observation!! |
