Weight Watchers Newsletter #74

Hi Everyone!
I know you're probably wondering why I would put a picture of a big Thanksgiving dinner in the newsletter in September. We do have a few months until we need to think about that. don't we? Well I would say "yes" if you're coming to meetings and working on losing weight, or maintaining. But if you are one of those people who used to come to meetings, and keeps saying to yourself that you'll get back to them "after the holidays", I have a sad fact to report: The average American gains 7-10 pounds over the holiday season!! So is it your choice to be one of those people, and if so you'll have to lose that weight "after the holidays" along with the weight you now have to lose? Kind of self-defeating, if we are honest with ourselves. And I am guessing many of you say this most years...and are losing the same weight over and over again.
So maybe 2010 could be different? Maybe you could join BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS, lose some weight before Thanksgiving, and stay the same or gain a little of it back over the holiday season. Because you'll be attending meetings you'll get lots of great ideas and inspiration to carry you through those food/alcohol-laden events with ease. And then you would not be losing that same weight, but instead be one of those cool people who'd already lost a bunch when everyone else joins in January! Just an idea...
And as an added incentive Weight Watchers has a special which gives you a free month if you sign up for the Monthly Pass before September 25th! What are you waiting for?

MEETING TOPICS: WEEKS OF September 19 & September 26, 2010
The week of September 19th we will discuss ASKING FOR HELP How many of us live with others, cook for others, work in environments with others, and yet either keep secret the fact we are working on losing weight from our family, friends or co-workers, or never ask for support or help on this path. How do we hurt our chances of success by doing this? The week of September 26th the topic is
OUTSMARTING THE SUPERMARKET
How many times have we gone to the grocery store and bought something we didn't need or really want because the packaging looked intriguing or it was on sale? How can we be saavy shoppers, support our healthy habits, and use the grocery store as a support system and a resource? We will look at smart shopping in this meeting, and I will be asking all of you to talk about your favorite markets and how they work for you!

PRODUCT SUGGESTIONS
BOLANI I love Farmers Markets, but generally eat something before I go to one because there is a fair amount of tempting food. But about a month ago I sampled a product called Bolani at a stand and looked at the label, which surprised me. This delicious stuffed crepe-like food was only 2 points per serving, which was half of a full 10" round! There were 2 rounds in the package, so 8 points total. They came stuffed with spinach or potato, lentil or pumpkin, in a phylo-dough like outer "crepe". Although they were sampling a variety of sauces with it, I found this to not only be completely delicious by itself, it was incredibly filling!
Last week they were sampling them at Whole Foods and I was reminded of this treat I had found at the market. Afghani in origin, these are quite yummy: no sauces needed, and although not technically a "filling food" by WW standards they are worth spending some of your non-filling food points on as they hit the spot!
ZEVIA A member in the Petaluma meeting today told us all about a new soft drink called Zevia, which is sweetened with Stevia, a natural, plant-based sweetener. I went out and got one and I have to say it tastes just like Hansens or any other kind of soda. It has no artificial ingedients, no calories, and best of all...no aftertaste! Sold at Whole Foods. |

DENVER'S AWESOME BUTTERNUT SQUASH RISOTTO

Ingredients
3/4 cup dried porcine mushrooms 2 cups butternut squash, cubed (you can buy pre-cubed squash at Trader Joes) 2 cups non-fat chicken broth 1 Tbl olive oil (or use spray oil to save points)
1 onion, finely chopped 3/4 cup arborio rice 1/2 cup fresh grated Parmesan cheese
Directions 1 Place the mushrooms in a bowl and cover with hot water. Soak for 1 hour, drain, pat dry and chop coarsely.
2 Cut open squash, remove seeds and cube or use pre-cubed. Cook in chicken broth until tender, but not "mushy". Remove half of the cooked cubed squash for later and puree the remainder with the broth. 3 Heat oil in large frying pan and saute onion and mushrooms. Add arborio rice and saute for a few minutes. Add about 1/2 to 3/4 cup of the broth with pureed squash and stir. As this becomes absorbed by the rice add another 1/2 to 3/4 cup and stir again. Repeat this until the rice is al dante, about 25-30 minutes. Fold in remaining squash gently to keep cubes intact.
4 Sprinkle each serving with Parmesan cheese.
Serves 4. 4 pts per serving.

A LIFE SAVING IDEA! (thank you Linden in Petaluma!)
Apparently this is a standard procedure paramedics follow at the scene of an accident when they come across your cell phone.
ICE - 'In Case of Emergency' We all carry our mobile phones with names & numbers stored in its memory but nobody, other than ourselves, knows which of these numbers belong to our closest family or friends.
If we were to be involved in an accident or were taken ill, the people attending us would have our mobile phone but wouldn't know who to call.. Yes, there are hundreds of numbers stored but which one is the contact person in case of an emergency? Hence this 'ICE' (In Case of Emergency) Campaign.
The concept of 'ICE' is catching on quickly. It is a method of contact during emergency situations. As cell(mobile) phones are carried by the majority of the population, all you need to do is store the number of a contact person or persons who should be contacted during emergency under the name 'ICE' (In Case O f Emergency).
The idea was thought up by a paramedic who found that when he went to the scenes of accidents, there were always mobile phones with patients, but they didn't know which number to call. He therefore thought that it would be a good idea if there was a nationally recognized name for this purpose. In an emergency situation, Emergency Service personnel and hospital Staff would be able to quickly contact the right person by simply dialing the number you have stored as 'ICE.'
For more than one contact name simply enter ICE1, ICE2 and ICE3 etc. A great idea that will make a difference!
Let's spread the concept of ICE by storing an ICE number in our Mobile phones today!
Please forward this . It won't take too many 'forwards' before everybody will know about this . It really could save your life, or put a loved one's mind at rest . ICE will speak for you when you are not able to.

A SAD PASSING
My cousin sent me this...
Please join me in remembering a great icon of the entertainment community. The Pillsbury Dough boy died yesterday of a yeast infection and traumaComplications from repeated pokes in the belly. He was 71.Dough boy was buried in a lightly greased coffin. Dozens of celebrities turned out to pay their respects, including Mrs. Butterworth, Hungry Jack, The California Raisins, Betty Crocker, the Hostess Twinkies, and Captain Crunch. The grave site was piled high with flours.Aunt Jemima delivered the eulogy and lovingly described Doughboy as a man who never knew how much he was kneaded. Doughboy rose quickly in showbusiness, but his later life was filled with turnovers. He was not considered a very smart cookie, wasting much of his dough on half-baked schemes. Despite being a little flaky at times he still was a crusty old man and was considered a positive roll model for millions.Doughboy is survived by his wife Play Dough, two children, John Dough and Jane Dough, plus they had one in the oven. He is also survived by hiselderly father, Pop Tart. The funeral was held at 350 for about 20 minutes. If this made you smile for even a brief second, please rise to the occasion and take time to pass it on and share that smile with someone else whomay be having a crumby day and kneads it.

TRULY FUNNY!
As we age we hope we are clever and wise...Here is a brilliant role model for us all...Thank you Valerie from Sonoma...
A friend of the couple who founded Home Instead Senior Care, Mary Maxwell was asked to give the invocation at the company's 2009 Convention. Initially it seemed like a normal prayer, but it soon took a very funny turn. Mary shines a very funny light on the foibles of aging, to the delight of this audience of senior-care experts.
