Hi Everyone!
I was excited to learn this week that our first lady, Michele Obama, is waging a campaign against childhood obesity! Statistics she sites: Nearly 20% of children ages 6 to 11 and 18% of those ages 12 to 19 are obese!
When I think about my childhood as an overweight kid, and how ostracized I felt because of it, I realize it was because I was very much in the minority. And although it was painful and sad for me, in a way it was better than the obese kids of today having this be a somewhat normal state of being, and therefore not really questioning it.
We all need to question it. Why is it happening? Certainly television and computers play a big part in lack of physical activity, but the big issue is the foods kids are eating. Parents are rushed and frazzled, and the first thing that goes is cooking healthy meals. Instead fast food, frozen food and the like is plopped in front of the children. In fact, cooking as a necessity of life has pretty much disappeared.
Those of you reading this who are cooking for your families...bravo!! But those of you with so much on your plates that this is just another task in your day, I would sooo love to see shift your attitude a bit and figure out ways to prepare some great meals a few times a week. Make enough to last 3 days, and make 2 different meals a week, leaving one day for the casual fare.
Unless you want your children to have to fight this battle as you are doing make this the year you get into the kitchen and make magic happen!

The Letter Column
Every once in awhile a member sends me a letter which I think will benefit everyone, so I publish it here. This is from Sally in Sonoma:
Enjoyed your article "I'm hungry!" You addressed Boredom, Stress, Anger, Anxiety, Sadness and Happiness. Missing was "HABIT": Eating / snacking at night in front of the TV. What suggestions do you have to overcome this favorite but devastating pass time?
Good question. Habit is the same as all the rest of the issues, and although one might not classify it as emotional eating, it is "comfort" eating, which is pretty much the same thing. So identify that you do it, when you do it (which you have done), and either :
a) Choose to make a change. Do something else during that time. Knit, do a crossword puzzle, etc. It will take about 30 days to break the habit, but may be well worth it in the long run.
b) Know you do this and plan for it. Save points and specfic foods for that time and behavior. Do not bring more than you will eat of those foods into your house, so you are not tempted to have "just a bit more". Allow yourself the designated amount and when it is done...brush your teeth and go to bed!!

Check Out This Great Video!!
This video shows the winner of 2009's " Ukraine 's Got Talent", Kseniya Simonova, 24, drawing a series of pictures on an illuminated sand table showing how ordinary people were affected by the German invasion during World War II. Her talent, which admittedly is a strange one, is mesmeric to watch.
