Hi Everyone!
I have
soooo much work I have to do for my festival (see below) that this intro is short and sweet!
But this issue will give you some great ideas about shopping...not for
food though. So hope you enjoy it, and hope you are all having a great summer so far!

Meeting Topics / Early August The
meeting the week of July 27th looks at keeping things under control even when they feel out of control. We could sure use that knowledge in our lives, can't we?
And I LOVE the topic for the week of August 10th. It is "Weight Watchers, Then and Now". Oh, just reading it brings back tons of memories from the old days. If you did the program way back when do not miss this meeting!

The Letter Department Not that long ago I wrote how it was imperative that we educate our children on healthy eating. Well I got an unusual letter from a friend who is not a Weight Watcher, and in fact is a vegan and very very healthy eater. It makes me realize we can be too dogmatic with our kids and that there is a balance, or our efforts can backfire on us.
Jan writes....
Hi
Janet,
I am very concerned
about my 29 year old son who is becoming overweight - eating lots of carbs
constantly. I don't know what to do or say or if I should talk to him about it.
Do you have any suggestions or input about that? It is very hard to witness - I
am concerned about his health.
Hi Jan,
I know you are a very healthy eater, and he likely
grew up eating in a way his friends were not necessarily doing. Now he is old
enough to eat as he wishes, and he is doing so. He is eating things he likely
was not allowed to have, or have on a very limited basis. Your upset around it,
and commenting on it will not make it stop, sad to say, and could make it
worse. Let him find his way. Eventually, through physical discomfort in his
limitations, or perhaps difficulty in meeting women, etc, he will deal with it.
But as I am sure you have figured out along the way with raising kids, they do
not always act in the way you wish them to do. Love him unconditionally and he
will figure out what is right for him.
There is a rather amusing book you might get called Eat
This Not That, which does not encourage healthy eating, but just points out the
worst of the junk food, vs the slightly better alternatives. I could write a
better one (and maybe will someday!), but this could at least point him in a
slightly healthier direction within the realm of the stuff he's eating. However
you giving it to him would be one more step in the wrong direction. So perhaps
simply having at the house when he comes to visit, or something along those
lines, might be an idea.

.SHOPPING IDEAS
This
past week's topic was about looking slimmer NOW, while we are losing
weight. I encouraged you to dress in a more slenderizing way, which
would likely mean buying clothes. I am a big proponent of buying used
clothing, as well as other things (cars, furniture, cookware, etc) as I
consider it recycling, so one small step in helping our beautiful
planet. One of my members suggested I put out a list of stores I
recommend so here it is...
SANTA ROSA: Goodwill 3535 Industrial Ave Salvation Army 4th & Brookwood
SEBASTOPOL: Pine Grove General Store 149 No Main St Aubergine 755 Petaluma Blvd So
SONOMA: Sisters 120 West Napa Street The Church Mouse 15 E Napa St
These are only a few of the vast number in the county. I know many of you have other favorites so email me the information and I will gladly include it in another newsletter!

Shameless Promotion!!
The Bodega Seafood Art & Wine Festival is Coming Aug 23 & 24!!
I have been the producer of this festival since it started 14 years ago, and it is a wonderful event. Excellent entertainment (Tommy Castro, Mitch Woods, etc), awesome food (save your points, but there are some surprisingly healthy options here...), an impressive wine and microbrewed beer tasting and wonderful art and fine craft. It is a benefit for the California State Parks in the Russian River region (Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods) as well as the Bodega Volunteer Fire Dept, so come have a great time and support these wonderful organizations!

Oh, and as an aside, we are always looking for volunteers! This festival is a benefit, so you are helping wonderful non-profits. You work 4 hour shifts, get fed and get a t-shirt, and of course get to spend the remaining time at the festival having fun! So if sounds like fun to help please please contact me!!!
