The Importance of Service Learning
The Importance of Service Learning

This video was produced to document the above project funded by Midwest Campus Compact Citizen Scientist Initiative in 2011.  UW-Parkside partnered with Gateway Technical College, UW-Extension and Racine/Kenosha Community Action Agenchy to engage science students in community food production and nutrition education.  Over 230 students from UW-Parkside and GTC took community-based learning courses in which they worked on projects that supported community gardens in Racine and Kenosha or assisted nutrition educators in providing low income and other individuals information about healthy nutrition options and food preparation.

UW-Parkside professors and instructors involved in the project included Penny Lyter (HESM), Stef Strauss-Thompkins (HESM), Patti Clearly (GEOS) and Dave Rogers (BIOS).  The video was made by AVA productions and its purpose is to inspire both students and faculty in the STEM disciplines to get involved with community based learning.
