for the
Community-Engaged Learning and Research Award
for Academic Staff 2011-2012
Did you work with an academic staff person at UW-Parkside on a project that went exceptionally well? Did the staff person meet or exceed your expectations for project accuracy and on time completion. Perhaps you'd like to nominate this person to receive the Community engaged learning and research award. This is an award given ever other year to an academic staff member who has done exceptional work with students on a community based project. Attached are the criteria for the award. Let me know if you want to honor someone.
Criteria:
Learning - Nominee has promoted community based learning for students through CBL activities that provided meaningful experiences and connections to civic and public issues. Nominee has been responsive to community partners through completion of and reporting on projects. Student evaluations substantiate the importance of CBL in the course toward achieving student learning goals.
Professional Development - Nominee has attended workshops/programs that demonstrate a commitment to promoting community based learning. Nominee promotes CBL to colleagues and provides support to achieve the goals of community based learning.
Commitment to Partners and Demonstrated Leadership - Nominee has demonstrated considerable commitment to the development of partnerships through outstanding leadership or outstanding contribution to project success.
The first academic staff recipient of this award was Debra Karp, Director of Community based scholarship and Nonprofit Development.
Nominations for this award should be sent to the Secretary of the Faculty office or emailed to Tara.schmidt@uwp.edu by April 16th . Nominees will be notified and will have until May 1st to submit documentation in support of their nomination.

"Cultivating Community One Seed at a Time"
This video was produced to document the above project funded by Midwest Campus Compact Citizen Scientist Initiative in 2011. UW-Parkside partnered with Gateway Technical College, UW-Extension and Racine/Kenosha Community Action Agenchy to engage science students in community food production and nutrition education. Over 230 students from UW-Parkside and GTC took community-based learning courses in which they worked on projects that supported community gardens in Racine and Kenosha or assisted nutrition educators in providing low income and other individuals information about healthy nutrition options and food preparation.
UW-Parkside professors and instructors involved in the project included Penny Lyter (HESM), Stef Strauss-Thompkins (HESM), Patti Clearly (GEOS) and Dave Rogers (BIOS). The video was made by AVA productions and its purpose is to inspire both students and faculty in the STEM disciplines to get involved with community based learning.

Ways to Work was originated by The McKnight Foundation in Minnesota in 1984 as the Family Loan Program. In 1996, The McKnight Foundation partnered The alliance for Children and Families of Milwaukee, Wisconsin to expand the program nationally. Ways to Work is a federally certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) and is an authorized community Reinvestment Act (CRA) program.
Since 1984, Ways to Work nationally has provided several million in loans to thousands of families. The local Ways to Work program was established in 2010 by Family Service of Racine.
We understand that even hardworking people need financial assistance at various times in their lives. The Ways to Work program assists low-income families by providing small loans to purchase a used auto which allows them to stay on the job or in school, even when faced with unexpected challenges.
