SteelFab of Virginia Awarded First Girder-Slab Military Housing Project
Congratulations to SteelFab of Virginia on having recently been awarded the Fort Myer Unaccompanied Enlisted Personnel HousingFort Myer UEPH Development (UEPH) development in Fort Myer, Virginia. Designed by TAT The Architectural Team, Inc. of Chelsea, Massachusetts and engineered by Odeh Engineers, Inc. of North Providence, Rhode Island, this exciting new project is the first military housing development to utilize the Girder-Slab System. In accordance with progressive collapse resistance requirements, the three-story, 80,000 square foot structure is being built by the Suffolk Construction Company of Boston, Massachusetts, and when completed will accommodate 216 soldiers in 108 units. The precast hollowcore slabs have been awarded to Mid-Atlantic Precast of King George, Virginia.

Design-Build Partnerships:                                          A Value-Based Industry Trend
Suffolk Construction teams up with The Architectural Team for a project awarded to Suffolk under MATOC (Multiple Award Task Order Contract) by the US Army Corps of Engineers.

The Fort Myer Unaccompanied Enlisted Housing (UEPH) development located in historic Fort Myer, Virginia brought this design-build team together for its first MATOC project. The collaboration, utilizing an integrated project delivery (IPD) approach, leverages the experience and capabilities of the entire development team, and ensures that the highest quality housing is provided for America's soldiers.

Under MATOC, a short-list of only three design-build companies were selected for the northeast region, and are permitted to bid on the $400 million task order comprised of 15-20 new USACE projects scheduled to be built over the next five years. TAT and Suffolk are the only New England-based firms in this group.

Located adjacent to Arlington National Park, the new three-story structure, totaling nearly 80,000 square feet of housing and services, will accommodate 216 soldiers in 108 shared two-person dwelling suites - the exact programmatic building type as mandated by Congress. Additionally, the firm was required to produce the design using Building Information Modeling (BIM) software for the entire design process, reducing delays in construction, minimizing unforeseen costs, and contributing to a national database of building prototypes and components.

The building is LEED Silver certified and will break ground in spring 2010.

A Word about the Engineer
David J. Odeh, Principal of Odeh Engineers, Inc. is one of the most experienced structural engineers currently utilizing the Girder-Slab System. With several completed projects in his portfolio, David's innovative approach to design can most recently be seen on the newly reopened Ocean House Hotel & Residence in Watch Hill, Rhode Island. The remarkable design and construction of the Ocean HouseOcean House Model demonstrates how the Girder-Slab System along with conventional structural steel can be implemented to accommodate a complex architectural layout. The hotel and residence, which opened in early June 2010, had been designed to retain the original integrity of the historic Ocean House Hotel originally built in 1868 on the same site.
