Bad news - good news
For me the Labor Day weekend is the opening curtain of the new work year. It almost seems there is a drastic weather change, a cooling off, kids off to school and a need to burrow in and get ready to till the soil of whatever it is we must attend. This has been a hard summer in many ways above and beyond the heat. I seemed to be the constant recipient of bad news. Some very dear sponsors have moved onto their eternal reward - Clete Brummer, Errol Guidry, Frank Tartaron, Barbara Pastick and our treasurer Frank Barfuss who served in that capacity for 20 years. Billy Kinnare lost his saintly daughter-in-law, Serafina Kinnare in a tragic car accident while she was summer vacationing in Pennsylvania. Clete and his wife Mary, above and beyond caring for families have sent many a seminarian on to the priesthood over the years; Errol and Sybil, Frank and Patricia and Barbara and Hank have taken care of so many families I have lost the count; Frank Barfuss was my very special right hand man keeping me on the financial straight and narrow. He garnered his whole family to care for families; and Billy is ever the supporter of not only his Indian family but also of retired Bishop Peter Chenaparampil who still has his charitable round of appointments pleading the cause of the poor. But loves labor is not lost. Their acts of love have surely born them up to the Presence of the Almighty.
Amidst all this bad news came a warm story from Sister Carmel Paul about a little girl named Bhaviasri. What follows is quite descriptive. I decided to not edit it so as to give you the flavor of Sister Carmel's letter to me. Sister Carmel is our director of FFA projects in Andhra Pradesh among the tribal people who are animists by faith. Sister captioned her story Love Gives Life.
I want to thank you for your continued generosity to God's poor. Even in these bad economic times we have maintained a strong presence with many sponsors struggling to make ends meet but hanging in with their families. "See how they love one another!" Word of mouth is still the strongest method to get others to consider joining. Please recommend your family and friends visit our website at www.openhearts.org.
Warmest regards in Saint Francis,

Love Gives Life
 | Bhaviasri |
A surprising phone message received from one of our Kindergarten students Bhaviasri met with an accident in the evening hours. She is from Uthandapuram village and from a poor family. Her father is a daily breadwinner and mother goes to paddy work when it is available and they have two children and she is the eldest. Younger is a boy aged two. She is very smart and active child. In her village near to her house she knocked at a stone and fell flat on the street. She had a very bad injury to the urethra which caused bleeding and unable to pass urine. Immediately she was taken to the nearby city hospital. They kept her under observation for a day and discharged not giving needed attention to the injury.
Parents had taken their child to three various hospitals for better treatment. A week later they found her with terrible stomach pain and taken to Vizag big hospital and they found her urethra was blocked and was infected and fracture on pubic bone. They have given some medication and placed catheter to pass the urine. Further treatment and investigation found that her urethra is fully closed up and they could not trace the place of it. She requires a plastic surgery to the urethra, which is very expensive and for the poor parents do not know where to turn. In this trying crucial moment we, the Canossian sisters shared the painful situations to Mr. Alan J. Ouimet and miraculously we received a special assistance from a FFA Sponsor to use a fund for the needy. Thus the fund became source of comfort to take a decision to accept the challenge of their financial difficulty and go ahead courageously. The Doctors are not given any security for the success of the surgery which is major, expensive and delicate. They could not trace the place of urethra which was completely disappeared without leaving any sign to be traced out.
After three months of medication on 15th June she underwent surgery successfully. She recovered and enjoying good health, which we believe as great miracle from God. All became possible by the compassionate heart of many especially by a timely generous contribution of FFA. Through this painful event Bhaviasri proclaim Jesus Prabu is my God and she tells her villagers and all those who meet her that Jesus healed her.

Rosamma an abandoned woman - till the soil, please help
Rosamma is a 39 year old abandoned woman living with her widowed mother, her brother and her 8 year old son suffering from a clipped lip. Her brother is a fisherman, a seasonal employment, and the sole bread-winner. With his irregular income he is struggling to manage his own living as well as that of their aged mother. Consequently, this poor woman and her son are a real burden. Rosamma's meager earnings come from some menial works in the neighboring houses which hardly fulfill their daily necessities. Her son, Sachu, is in the 3rd grade. She is trying to forget all the painful experiences in her married life through her child. His future is her only goal but she has no means to attain it. So she is leading a very depressive life. This poor mother is very much worried that she cannot fulfill the educational needs of her son. This family is living in Rosamma's paternal house. It is built long years back and is in a bad condition. The house is incomplete too. She has no idea about how long she will be able to survive in this home with her son. In future when her brother gets married she is bound to leave this house. As long as her mother is alive she could survive there, after that she may not find shelter to dwell with her son peacefully. She is longing for a kind assistance to survive and to provide a better future to her son. Sr. Daphne Anto |
