Community Connection

                                                                                   January 2011

Dear Friend,

The new year has always filled me with a sense of hope and promise for the future. What will 2011 bring? While we are encouraged by the anticipation of an improved economy, it is also expected that this recovery will not reduce unemployment for some time to come, continuing to impact those with whom we work

Yet there is also so much to which we look forward. As we help stabilize the lives of families by continuing as a critical safety net and assisting adults in employment and other ways, we will also continue to support children and youth through a wide variety of programs offered through our community centers, the BEL Center, housing programs and so much more. To see children thrive through mentoring, field trips, tutoring, clubs and other activities, is to see a positive future. There is nothing more rewarding than that.

Happy New Year,

UWHealthScreeningsFree Health Screenings Provide Critical Care to Those In Need
United Way Health Screenings

Volunteers and community members filled UCM's large conference room.

This past Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, UCM played host to the United Way of the National Capital Area, Kaiser Permanente, the National Kidney Foundation and several other partner agencies to provide free health screenings to community members.

From 10 am - 5 pm, individuals came to UCM's office to be screened for a wide variety of health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, hearing or vision problems and much more. More than 500 people were screened, and four peoples' lives may have been saved when they were rushed to the hospital due to dangerous screening results.

UCM is very grateful for the opportunity to work with the United Way of the National Capital Area to provide such an invaluable service to the community.

CapStepsThe Capitol Steps Are Headed This Way

Capitol Steps LogoThe Friends of UCM hosts the annual Capitol Steps benefit on Sunday, January 30 at 5:00 pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall. This evening of comedy and satire is always a crowd pleaser, and 100% of the proceeds go to support UCM and its programs.

The Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them.

Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 30 albums, including their latest, Liberal Shop of Horrors and Barackin' Around the Christmas Tree . They've been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS, and can be heard 4 times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their Politics Takes a Holiday radio specials.

Tickets are still available--but they are going fast! General seating for the event is $40 and reserved seating with complimentary beverages and food is $70 . To purchase tickets online, click here. Alternatively, checks made out to UCM may be sent to:
