Community Connection
                                                                                             November 2010

Dear Friend,  Cynthia N. Hull, Executive Director

Our community continues to amaze and inspire me with its generosity. Just this past weekend, more than 70 volunteers from age 6 to age 60+ gathered at UCM's main office to sort the more than 14,000 pounds of food that community members donated through the Boys Scout's Annual Food Drive. Boxes are piled nearly to the ceiling in our large conference room, filled with food for our neighbors in need. To see our community come out in such a force to feed the hungry is simply wonderful!

With Thanksgiving less than a week away, we are distributing holiday food to our program participants. Their joyful smiles, and excited thank you's to our food pantry manager, Jose, when they receive a turkey and other holiday food can be heard and felt around the building. It reminds me of how thankful I am to work for an agency that helps so many people in so many ways-and we are able to do this work only because of the caring support of people like you.  Thank you so much for all that you do.

Happy Thanksgiving,

UCM's Holiday RoomThanksgiving is just a few days away and in no time at all the winter holidays will be here!

Each year, UCM helps families in need to have a happy holiday season by providing thousands of toys and other gifts for children through our holiday Share the Joy program--and your help is what makes this program possible!

Please consider supporting the Share the Joy program by:

  • Donating new, unwrapped toys for children aged infant to 15 years--gift cards are also welcome
  • Volunteering in the Holiday Shop at UCM, where parents browse and pick out gifts for their children
  • Hosting a gift drive at your church, business or civic organization
  • Donating holiday food items such as turkeys, hams, stuffing, etc.
For more information about helping out with the Share the Joy program, please contact Christine Fiske at 703-768-7106 ext 328 or christine.fiske@ucmagency.org.

EasyAn Easy (And Free!) Way to Help UCM

There's an easy way to help UCM get the word out about the great work that we do! Won't you help us participate in the campaign by posting a review of your experience with us? If UCM has at least 10 positive reviews (4 or 5 stars) by November 30th, 2010, we will receive exposure to potential donors via the GreatNonprofits Top-Rated Food & Shelter Nonprofits List.

All reviews will be visible to potential donors and volunteers. It's easy and only takes 3 minutes!

Go to: www.greatnonprofits.org/organizations/reviews/united-community-ministries-inc.  Be sure to choose "Food & Shelter Campaign" from the drop down menu of campaigns in the review template! With your help, we can gain greater visibility in our community.

CFCChoose UCM for Your CFC or United Way Designation

Do you have a Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) or United Way campaign going on in your office this fall? If you do, we hope that you will choose to designate a one-time or recurring gift to UCM through these campaigns. UCM's CFC number is 37839 and our United Way number is 8199.

Giving through your workplace is an easy way to make a difference without having to get out your checkbook or credit card. If you make a recurring gift, you can choose to have funds deducted each pay period or every other pay period...the choice is up to you! It is a simple way to support UCM and a huge help to us. Funds from the CFC and United Way are invaluably important to funding the programs and services UCM provides to help individuals and families in need get back on their feet. When it comes time to fill out your CFC or United Way forms, make sure to remember UCM!
