UCM Spring Gala: Help Our Community Flourish
Join the Friends of UCM on Saturday, April 24, 2010 for UCM's Spring Gala, UCM in Bloom: Helping Our Community Flourish. It will be an evening of great food, great entertainment and great fun to benefit the programs and services of United Community Ministries. The evening's festivities will kick off at 6 p.m. with cocktails and raffles for baskets filled with exciting treasures. A sumptuous dinner will be served at 7:15, followed by the thrill of a fantastic live auction at 8:30. The musical stylings of High Mileage will lure you to the dance floor beginning at 9:00. Volunteer Highlight: Basic Needs Counselors
"The Volunteer Counselors are very important to our work with clients," says Basic Needs Manager, Alex Pytel. UCM Basic Needs Counselors provide community members who have fallen on hard times with the individualized support that they need to get back on their feet. They help UCM clients find ways to meet their most urgent needs and help clients build skills required to become self-sufficient. Read more... | |
From Retail to Rewarding Career: One Intern's Experience
Janet's part-time job in retail just wasn't cutting it. She wasn't making enough money, there was no upward mobility and she didn't enjoy it. After three years of working in a clothing store, she was ready to look for a job in an office. Unfortunately, she didn't quite know how.
Janet was referred to UCM by the South County Health Center when she needed formula for her son. While she was at UCM, Janet got a flyer with information about the programs and services that the Workforce Development Center offered. She decided that she would go check it out.
The first time that Janet met with a career counselor, they discussed Janet's skills, educational goals, and work ambitions. When Janet met with her career counselor the second time, she got help developing her resume and applying for jobs. Not long after her second visit to the center, UCM's Workforce Development Counselor called her with an internship opportunity at a local church. Although the internship would be unpaid, it would give Janet the skill set that she needed to find an office job. It was a difficult decision because Janet needed to make money to support herself.
