Despite Snow, UCM Makes Holidays Brighter for
Hundreds of Children in Need
Pictured Above: UCM's Holiday Room Offers Thousands of Toys for Needy Children
Members of churches, civic organizations, local businesses and people from all walks of life generously gave of gifts and funding so they could share the joy of the holidays with others less fortunate.
Dedicated volunteers spent day after day sorting the toys and setting up "shopping" tables once the toys were delivered. The Holiday Room was stuffed to the gills and every nearby available office cubicle jam packed with all the toys that would be needed to fill stockings and brighten the holidays for hundreds of children.
And then the snow came. Over 20 inches. On the day parents were to pick up gifts. And everything stopped. But only temporarily.
Though UCM did close its Holiday Room during the height of the storm, once travel became safe again and the parking lots were somewhat cleared of snow, UCM employees and countless volunteers worked extra hours and extended days to ensure that parents received gifts for their children. In addition to picking out age appropriate gifts and stocking stuffers for the children, every family received a game and a ball (soccer balls went fast), and every child received a book. This, thanks to the amazing generosity of hundreds of people who donated thousands gifts and gift cards for children of every age, from newborn to 16.
"UCM staff was a tremendous help to me during this time, but it was the volunteers who saved the day," said Christine Fiske, UCM's Volunteer Coordinator. "Some volunteers worked from 8:00 am until 7:00 pm just to be sure everyone got what they needed. I was never without an outpouring of help. It was truly a blessing to be able to experience both the generosity and thoughtfulness of those with much to give, and the extensive appreciation and gratitude of those who received!"
Thank you, everyone, for your generosity. Because of you, the holidays were made brighter for so many children and youth in our community. |
Number of People Seeking Assistance for
Basic Needs Continues to Rise
Despite pronouncements that the recession may be abating, UCM continues to see a record number of clients seeking basic needs such as food, eviction prevention, utilities cut-off prevention, and emergency dental/prescription services.
A quick look at the data from the last six months demonstrates the continuing rise in need:
People Receiving Emergency Food
July through December 2008: 6,775
July through December 2009: 7,241
People Receiving Utilities Cut-Off Prevention
July through December 2008: 546
July through December 2009: 892
"Just this morning, I worked with three families who needed help with their utilities," said Ana Moran, one of UCM's Basic Needs Counselors. "All of them were working, but their hours had been reduced and they weren't earning enough to make ends meet. One woman's husband lost her job, and they were being threatened with disconnection of their utilities. Another was on unemployment, but the payments he received weren't enough to pay the bills for his family of five."
In addition to help with utilities, these families also received emergency food services from UCM.
"Thanks to an increase in community support and participation in programs like Dominion's EnergyShare, which provides financial support to help people with their heating and cooling bills, we have been able to help more and more people," says UCM Executive Director Cynthia Hull. "However," she adds, "although donations have increased from our generous community members, they have not increased nearly enough to keep pace with the greater need. Right now, the pantry shelves are pretty bare and EnergyShare funds are used. We are currently seeking extra donations of food to once again fill the pantry. While matching resources with need is sometimes challenging, we are always grateful that UCM is here to help."
