Greetings!

This year is a leap year.  We get an "extra" day, Wednesday, February 29.  Sadly, it got tagged like a regular day of the week, and not labeled simply Leap Day.  Wouldn't it be great if the calendar read: "Tuesday, Leap Day, Wednesday" and that extra day in the week we've been asking for would finally be there? Leap Day should be the very best holiday of all. It hasn't been commercialized at all.  Nobody tells us that we have to spend it in any particular way or with any particular people.  There are no expectations of the day.  It's a fill-in-the-blank.  It is ready to become whatever you want it to be.

What have you been putting off that is fun, silly or routine?  Whatever it is you've always wanted to do, this is exactly that "Official Holiday." Do it!  For one day, let there be no obligations or excuses.

Here's a suggestion for surprising a few friends for no reason beyond the fact that friends, treats, and surprises are very nice:

  • Get one pair of new wild, colorful socks for each pair of friends you plan to treat.  It's Leap Day, so it is foot-and-sock related.  If you need to do a variation with gardening gloves, that's OK, too, but normally fingers do the walking, not the leaping.
  • Next, fill up the socks, one per friend, with fun things that leap; perhaps a wind-up frog, a jump rope, or a mini-slinky for the young at heart.
  • Always include chocolate: that should really go without saying.  But think about other things that your friend would find cheerful and welcome: things that would make your friend jump for joy, or the heart "skip a beat."
  • Add some poetry or other inspiration about Leap Day and making the most of the extra day.
  • Stealthily deliver the filled sock, hang it from the doorknob, or leave it someplace it will be discovered.  The preferred option is to not get caught, but also not to freak out your friends.

Have a great extra day!

We may not be able to change that outcome, but we hope to change the journey.
