Greetings!
Each month the WhatFriendsDo.com newsletters highlight a different topic about friendships, and what friends do to help one another through a crisis or challenging time in life. Whether you are a casual acquaintance, co-worker, classmate, or best friend of someone going through a challenge, your friendship will grow in surprising ways. Making the journey easier is what friends do. |
Surprises!
People often say they don't like surprises. What they probably mean is that they don't like to be startled, put on the spot in public, or feel like someone has intruded in their private space. The surprises promoted on WhatFriendsDo.com are more like anonymous ways to help or encourage a friend in need - things that bring a smile on a difficult day.
Examples of fun surprises:
-
A gift box on the doorstep filled with a mug, tea bags, snacks, a book or DVD.
-
Daily gifts with a theme such as "spring garden" - flower seed packets on Monday, tomato plants on Tuesday, herbs on Wednesday, blooming flowers on Thursday, a note on Friday indicating that friendly elves will arrive at 1pm on Saturday to get flowerbeds ready for planting.
-
Special delivery each Sunday: collect notes and cards all week and bundle them with a pretty ribbon, then place the bundle in your friend's mailbox each Sunday. These don't replace cards throughout the week - but instead they are a special delivery each week on the day the mailman doesn't come.

A Special Surprise the WhatFriendsDo Way
Part I: From Sonja's friend:
I wanted to buy Sonja an angel. I thought that this was going to be an easy task, but by the fifth store I still could not find the right angel. I went home and thought of everything that I wanted the angel to represent---encouragement, friendship, laughter, fun, hope, love, and support. I then realized I needed more than one angel. I received an Oriental Trading magazine in the mail, and this was the answer to my dilemma. I bought several angels and attached a saying, poem, joke, or story to each angel. I came up with a clever way to hide the angels around Sonja's house. She still does not know who I am---which I think adds to the fun. The Guarding Angel poem is the first poem an angel gave to Sonja; it expresses what I hope my troop of angels is achieving.
Part II: From Sonja:
I don't generally like surprises, I think it's because I like to be in control and have a plan, especially while battling breast cancer. Recently someone or some-ones, who won't confess, have been sneaking into my house and hanging little angels with inspirational quotes attached to them. I don't find them all at once. As I go about my day I find one in a drawer, a closet, hanging on a knob, any place you can think of. I even sat on one today. I love finding them so much that I leave them or put them in a place where I will find it more. My husband hides them again, too. At any random time of day, when I find an angel, I stop what I'm doing, hold it in my hand, read it, and say thanks to the angel that hid it in my house to make me feel better. It does lift my spirits to know that there are people out there who love me and are supporting me whether I know it or not. I can feel the love that everyone is sending me and it is pushing me along. | |
We might not be able to change the outcome of your situation, but we hope we can change the journey!
