Welcome Back !

Here are a few of the tutors that have recently returned to take new adult students.....

Marion Elliostarted tutoring with Literacy Action in 1999. She has had a number of Basic Literacy and English students, each benefiting from their lessons with her. Many of her students have been able to get jobs and job promotions. One of her students was an entrepreneur. Marion said initially he did not have very high self esteem. She worked with him through empowering practices like taking him to register to vote, and he continuously worked to improve his reading. Pretty soon, he was able to start his own business! After taking a break, Marion has begun tutoring again with Literacy Action. She says she wanted to come back because, "the students need me and I need them." She is currently tutoring a Basic Literacy student and enjoying their time together.

Helen Leigh first came to Literacy Action is 2007. She has tutored a variety of students from beginning English speakers to low-level readers; however her best experience tutoring was with a Basic Literacy student with whom she worked over 341 hours over 2 years. She says working with this student was enjoyable and a learning experience. The two became close friends. Once the student had gone as far as she could through the Literacy Action program, they decided to end lessons. Helen came back to volunteer again, and is currently tutoring a Basic Literacy student.

Becky White began tutoring for Literacy Action as an English instructor in 2008. After working with an English student from the Czech Republic for one year, the student got married and moved out of state. She was assigned another English student from India who had an ultimate goal of passing the U.S. citizenship exam. The two worked tirelessly to get the student ready for the test which requires a comprehensive understanding of English reading and writing as well as U.S. history. Their hard work paid off as the student eventually passed the citizenship exam! Becky attributes this accomplishment to being patient and listening to students in order to find out what their needs are. Her two new English students from South Korea are very fortunate to have a wonderful and experienced tutor like her.

Literacy Action Newsletter
July 2011
Greetings!

Forget about the hot and lazy days of summer! Some real cool things are happening at Literacy Action.

July has been one of our busiest months. Here are three cool examples that I believe show a new level of engagement in our mission.

  • Experienced tutors are returning. Over the last few weeks we received calls from three returning tutors who were asking for new students. Read about Marion Elliot (1999), Helen Leigh (2007) and Becky White (2008) in the Welcome Back section of the newsletter.
  • Adult literacy students have been recognized. Margaret Hammonds recently was awarded the 2011 Frank Lyons Achiever of the Year by Goodwill Industries of Arkansas, Inc. Margaret began working with Literacy Action in 2005 and recently started a new job at the Arkansas Democrat Gazette.
  • New AmeriCorps positions awarded. Literacy Action was recently awarded three part -time AmeriCorps positions. Starting in October, the AmeriCorps volunteers will be actively engaged in tutoring adult literacy students in both Pulaski and Faulkner counties.

Take a few minutes to read all of the news.

Adult Basic Tutor Workshop
Group Workshop

The next Adult Basic Tutor Workshop is scheduled for August 27th. Over the last few months, the number of adults seeking help with literacy skills has continued to be strong. Currently we have 17 adult literacy students waiting to be assigned to a tutor and we are receiving 2 - 3 new students each week. Tell a friend about tutoring opportunities with Literacy Action. We would be happy to answer any question they may have.

To register on line, visit the Literacy Action web site or contact Katie Keen, 501-372-7323.

ESL Training , Sign-up for the September Workshop!

The ESL Training Workshop scheduled for September 17, 2011 will prepare you to teach English to a non-native speaker. The workshop will include an orientation to Literacy Action's mission and the ways we are working to solve adult literacy problems in Central Arkansas. Training includes an orientation to working with adult literacy students, as well specific information on tutoring techniques for teaching English as a second language. We will also discuss lesson planning and documentation.

We currently have three ESL students waiting to be paired with one-on-one tutors and we are anticipating starting new ESL small group classes in the fall. Computer Lab Now Open
Anthony White
 Anthony White, ESL Student

The computer lab is now open and ready for more students. Several students are working on various programs now, and we look forward to assigning more students in the weeks to come. Our ESL students are using Rosetta Stone, as well as other English language programs. Basic literacy students have a range of programs covering phonics, spelling, and reading. The computer lab provides learning opportunities for new students who are waiting on a tutor and for current students who would like to supplement their lessons. Tutors, if you would like to use the lab with your students, just call and set up a time. We also need more volunteers to assist students; if you have a few hours a week to give, please let us know. Computer lab hours are 9:00 - 12:00 and 1:00 - 4:00 Monday thru Thursday, and 9:00 - 12:00 on Fridays.

Congratulations to Margaret Hammonds who was awarded the 2011 Frank Lyons Achiever of the Year by Goodwill Industries of Arkansas,Inc. After struggling with reading for many years, she began working with Literacy Action in 2005.  She believes that perseverance, a positive attitude and dedicated tutors helped her improve her reading skills. Margaret started a new job at the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette earlier this year.

New ESL Class Sites

We are working with a church in the UALR area that is organizing ESL evening classes beginning in September. There are a several people who have committed to help, but we need another ESL tutor in order to ensure a successful start-up. We anticipate the first class will run for 6 weeks. If you are an experienced ESL tutor and would like to assist with this project, please contact Katie Keen, kkeen@literacylittlerock.org, 501-372-7323.

The Pretenders, Coping with Illiteracy
John Howard

by John Howard

All my life I pretended I could read. I would hold a newspaper as though I was reading it. I am a good listener, and I would listen to how people talked and would go home and repeat what they had said over and over until I could pronounce the words I didn't understand, and tried to figure out what they meant from what they said. I developed a good speaking vocabulary I could use in conversations to cover the fact that I couldn't read or write.

During those years, I found that there were a lot of people like me, and they had their own way of pretending.
