Message From The President

Dear Friends of LACA,

Literacy Action continues to lead the way in addressing adult literacy issues in Central Arkansas. Included below are a few examples of projects we have successfully undertaken in the last year:
  • Expanded the number of ESL group classes offered to the community-- now ESL students in SW Little Rock and Conway have even more options to lean English.
  • Launched a new web site to inform the community about the important work Literacy Action volunteers are doing in the Central Arkansas area.
  • Increased the accessibility of tutor workshops by incorporating on-line instruction and shortening the live classroom requirements to just one day.
  • Sponsored specialized tutor training to enable our tutors to better serve  students with learning disabilities.
  • Merged operations with Faulkner County Literacy Council  in order to address the needs of adult learners in the combined Pulaski- Faulkner metro area.
  • Upgraded our office space by moving to the newly renovated 5th floor of the Main Library, located in the River Market area.

As we look forward to the new year, the Literacy Action staff and board are already hard at work building on the foundation that has been laid by hundreds of community volunteers. Our goal is to faithfully continue to support our Literacy Action tutors as we address the needs of our current adult learner client base and as expand our reach to new under served populations.

For many of us this year has been especially challenging; however, as we look back at the thousands of hours collectively given by Literacy Action volunteers we see that we can together make a difference in our community. We can't wait to see what we can accomplish in 2011!

Ellen Justus

Meet the Staff
Katie Keen and Patrick Lindsey, new Literacy Action staff.
Lindsey, Keen, 2011

The friendly faces newly seen around the Literacy Action offices belong to Katie Keen and Patrick Lindsey.

Katie has been with Literacy Action for almost a year as an Americorps volunteer and is now a part-time employee on the LACA staff. She is a junior at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, with a double major in International Business and Spanish and a minor in Non-profit Management.  She currently tutors four students one-on-one and teaches twice a week with Good Samaritan.  She is an avid reader, currently is reading Thoreau Walden, and her favorite chapter titles include, The Adventure of Self Discovery and Guns, Germs, and Steel.

Patrick is our new Americorps volunteer and new to Literacy Action.  Also a junior at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, he is studying International Relations and Spanish.  He tutors a group ESL class with Good Samaritan, Daisy Bates, and Mosaic and has one student for private tutoring.  He is currently reading The New Jim Crow and considers Open Veins, A Blind America one of his favorite books.

New Office Space for Literacy Action

Main Library Literacy Action has upgraded to new office space located on the newly renovated fifth floor of the Main Library. We are proud to have the prime location in this new facility. Even though it has taken some time to fit into our new space, we will enjoy access to a new training room and individual study rooms, and we will eventually be only a few steps away from the Library's new coffee bar and snack area. It may be a little difficult for tutors and students to get down to business because the 5th floor features some of the best views of the River Market area!
