Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
How Do I Renew My Notary Commission?

It is important to note that the Notary Division in Richmond does not send notices about renewing your commission.  It is your responsibility to keep track of your commission expiration date.  Please don't wait until the last minute to renew your commission.    The Application for Appointment As Notary Public can be downloaded in either Adobe pdf or Word files.

You will note that new application contains specific information pertaining to renewing such as:  If renewing, is this a name change?; enter your Notary Registration Number; If renewing, is this home address a new address?   To ensure timely processing of your application, please make sure you complete the application.  Leaving "blanks" may cause your application to be rejected and returned to you.   There is a $45.00 fee for new/renewing applicants.question

I have recently applied for my Virginia Notary commission.  Will I receive my Notary Certificate in the mail?

The Notary Division will send you a letter approving your Notary commission which will be mailed to the Court that you chose on your notary application.  You have 60 days to claim your Notary Commission from the date of issuance or it becomes invalid.  If you fail to claim your commission within the 60 days and are still interested in becoming a notary, you will have to reapply and pay another $45.00 application fee.

If you haven't received your notice within four weeks of applying for your Notary commission, please contact the Clerk of the Court to verify that your commission has been received.   Refer to your 2008 Notary Handbook, page 3 - Obtaining A Commission.  There is a $10.00 fee payable to the Court when you take your Oath of Office.  After you have been sworn in, you will be receive your official Notary Certificate.
