Greetings

...and thank you to all of you who took the time to comment on our inaugural email newsletter. Even though I am a resistant follow-through I am planning to issue this newsletter on a monthly basis. Exceptions to this will be when I receive new research or findings that I think would be of great interest and immediate relevance.

Have a great summer!
Gord

Talent Management webinar: Retire retirement
stock old Are you already feeling the effects of the Baby boomer retirement?  I was recently part of a webinar sponsored by Talent Management magazine. This webinar was attended by over 400 people. I remember attending a similar event two years ago sponsored by Chief Learning Officer and being surprised that just slightly over 100 people were interested in this topic. At that time, most people indicated that they had done little or nothing toward planning for the baby boomer retirement. Last week, a similar survey was conducted by the on-line participants.
Findings were:
  • 42% of those responding are already experiencing a talent shortage and are examining ways to better recruit and retain workers including older workers.
  • 24% of respondents are not yet feeling the effects but are getting ready for the changes.
  • 24% expect talent shortages will be a significant issue in the future.
  • 5% don't expect a shortage in their industry.
  • 5% other.
Importantly, the facilitators discussed key tactics for retaining older workers in organizations. Email me and I will pass these tips onto you along with a list of great books I have been reading about the changing workforce.
Deloitte article goes for the heart
Do you know where your talent is?
Delotte consulting has just come out with a fantastic article on Talent management. You can read the article here: http://www.deloitte.com/dtt/article/0,1002,sid=26554&cid=142950,00.html

In the article they make a great case for going the extra mile to find out about what really matters to your employees by engaging their heads and their hearts.
Understanding what your employees really want helps to create a new sense of engagement in work if they can develop a personal passion for what they do. With the early middle and late boomers regularly reporting a lower level of engagement with their workplace,  it behooves employers to develop innovative ways of reaching out to what is arguably their most valuable talent assets. For a great article on the troubles of middle life in the workplace, Harvard Business Review for March 2006 looks at Managing Middleessence - a must read.
The Best-Half puts people  in touch with what really matters to them at any stage of their career and shows them how to find purpose and a new meaning in both their work and home life. - hint: it's all about legacy and possibility!

Call us if you want to help your people plan for the future. It's going to be here before you know it (the future that is...)

Sincerely,
