Title: Randy F.- 11th Step Meditation Speaker on "SpiritStep Two: Inner Connection to Spiritual Sanity" and a Group Meditation
Randy will discuss how to turn the first 3 Steps into action steps through meditation with a discussion on Step 2 and inner connections to spiritual sanity. This is a preview of the next SpiritStep CD being released this summer.
Randy F. combines a blend of multi-tradition spiritual teachings, elementary quantum science concepts and 12 Step recovery based dialogue to educate, guide and allow 12 Step meditators to deepen their recovery with a discussion to teach meditation concepts, techniques to be effective and guided meditations.
We are using this new collaboration method to gather our recovery meditation community live, online to share this experience together.
You will be able to view Randy's presentation slides online, listen to his share and guided meditation through the speakers connected to your computer.

Music for Meditation - Strategies for Use in 11th Step Group and Lecture Formats
By Patrick Haggerson, M.A., ICADC |
Patrick gave the following presentation to his fellow co-workers at the Betty Ford Center and has offered to share it with us.
I. Goal - To aid participants in experiencing a state of relaxation, this ultimately leads into a state of meditation. Meditation can be defined and measured as a shift in brain wave from beta (waking consciousness) to Alpha (creativity, light meditation) or eventually theta (deeper meditative state). These changes can be felt by the participants as a sense of relaxation, relief, peace, deep sigh, etc.
II. Strategies and preparations -
a. Review various pieces of music to find some that you feel comfortable with. There are many CD's which support meditation in the Betty Ford Center Bookstore, your local bookstores and on Amazon.com. Find a few pieces that resonate with you.
b. Sit comfortably while you experience the music in your own meditation period. Set a timer for 5 to 12 minutes or whatever time you want to use with your clients/patients and listen to the music for that length of time. Experiment speaking as though you are guiding the meditation and adjust the music so it is background and soft.
Patrick is an Internationally Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor. He received his M.A. from the University of Iowa in Substance Abuse Counseling with a Bi-lingual, Multicultural Counseling Certificate in 1988. He has been an employee of the Betty Ford Center for the past ten years as a Family Program Counselor and currently works in the Training Department.
Patrick and his trio, Desert Spirit, created Peaceful Sounds For Meditation, a CD containing 4 (12-minute) original pieces of meditation music on Native American flute with guitar, natural sounds and keyboard backing.

| Remaining Free from Addictions through The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali: The Eight Limbs of Yoga. By Sherrie Wade |
|
I. Yam - life-supporting style of being:
1. Ahinsaa - non-violence
When using substances you are doing violence to your body and your health. Non-violence means not hurting yourself or others. You may overeat or eat the wrong foods because you feel uneasy, emotionally distraught or unhappy. The solution is to counteract this diseased condition in your system caused by your self-violent actions. Therefore, the practice of non-violence starts with loving yourself. How to love yourself then becomes the primal question. To unfold the answer we move on to the other limbs for guidance.
2. Satya - non-deception, truthfulness
How to stay truthful to yourself? The recovering person's intention is always to be truthful about what substances they use. But the nature of the unfulfilled mind and nervous system is denial and dishonesty. To live in truthfulness is to honestly and clearly observe your mental conditions about what you put into your system. This self observation gets you directly in touch with the Knower of all your thoughts and feelings.
As one practices meditation, putting one's attention on Knower, one remains free from mind, senses, thought patterns and latent desires....
