March/2008
Greetings!

Welcome to our March 11th Step Meditation Newsletter.

Are you noticing the same thing that I am?  I am beginning to sense a real
"11th Step Meditation Movement" in recovery.  Meditation meetings are becoming more popular, recovery and treatment facilities are paying more attention to including meditation into their programs, recovery tools and articles about meditation in recovery are becoming more prevalent.

I think that meditation is one of the under explored frontiers in recovery and this Movement is keeping in line with the growing consciousness of the world today.

There is no better way to begin, deepen or  enhance your daily 11th Step Meditation practice than through group meditations, workshops and retreats. We will continue to make this a regular section of the newsletter.

As we enter into Easter Week, I can't help feeling tremendous gratitude for the program of Alcoholics Anonymous which has given me a new life!  It is through 11th Step Meditation that I continue to grow and experience new depths to my recovery, spirit and the Creative Intelligence within that interconnects all of us!

Context

Context is critical here. When I allude to powerlessness, I am speaking of the human condition called alcoholism. Yet, as my spirit awakens, I understand my spirit/soul is perfect and complete. My spirit knows only power through conscious spiritual practices, by practicing the presence. This awakened spiritual power allows the condition of alcoholism to be healed. It is important not to confuse the language describing addiction with the activity of awakening and standing consciously in wholeness and power. Words depicting the effects of addiction are much too limited to describe the process of spiritual awakening. You will need new words.

Step Eleven is found on pages 96-105 of the book Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions.

The first sentence of this chapter is clear and profound in stating the importance of this step to the spiritual program of the 12 Steps.

"Prayer and Meditation are our principal means of Conscious contact with God." Page 96

Three cornerstones of recovery

The foundation of our program, as laid out in the Big Book and elaborated on more fully in the Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, is very succinctly described in the following statement:

"There is a direct linkage among self-examination, meditation, and prayer.  Taken separately, these practices can bring much relief and benefit. But when they are logically related and interwoven, the result is an unshakable foundation for life." Page 98

The majority of the Steps demonstrate to us how to practice the art of self-examination as we review our resentments, fears, defects and harm we have caused.

What is the difference between prayer and meditation?
