"Los Angeles, CA -   Carol Cumes, author, gardener, yoga retreat chatelaine, and non-profit founder of the Willka T'ika Children's Fund in Peru, has won First Place in the Writer's Digest Awards Inspirational category for her publication Chakra Gardens: Opening the Senses of the Soul (Mitra Publishing).   The award will be announced in the March/April issue of Writer's Digest magazine being mailed to subscribers in February 2010.

Cumes' Chakra Gardens invites the reader into the world of the Sacred Valley, deep in the heart of the Andes of Peru, and into a magical reconnection with Mother Earth and oneself.  Each chapter weaves stories of personal healing and transformation with the garden's elements, and includes a living cultural history of the Quechua people, and the sacred rituals and ceremonies they use to create a world in balance.  The seven chakra gardens are inspired by the ancient yoga philosophy which connects the seven energy centers to one's soul.   "Chakra gardens are gardens of peace.  They do not restrict or impose.  They simply support people in experiencing their own deep connection to Source," writes the author.

Proceeds from the book benefit the non-profit Willka T'ika Children's Fund to support the isolated mountain schools and Andean children in their communities.

Writer's Digest, both a popular print magazine and web site for writers, "is considered the No. 1 magazine for writers, celebrating the writing life and what it means to be a writer in today's publishing environment," according to its editors.  2010 commemorates its 90th anniversary.  Cumes' win is part of the 17th Annual Awards competition, and is particularly noteworthy as the award honors the quality of her writing and was judged by writer peers.

The Writer's Digest Awards are produced by Writer's Digest parent company F+W Media of Cincinnati, Ohio.   There were 2600 contestants who entered in nine categories; 250 applied in the inspirational category.

Cumes also won the Independent Publisher Book Award (also known as the IPPY Award), for Best New Age/Mind Body Spirit Book 2009.
