Greetings!
|
United Way of Greater Nashua invites you to LIVE UNITED as a way for our community to come together to create changes that will benefit us all. We all win when a child succeeds, when families are financially stable, and when people have good health. LIVE UNITED is a call to action for everyone to do what he or she can - give, advocate, or volunteer - to help improve and strengthen our community. As more of our neighbors struggle with costs for basic needs like food and heat, YOU can make a difference.

Need help? Dial 2-1-1 for social services info
|
In June, United Ways of NH launched 2-1-1 NH, a toll-free number that people can access from anywhere in New Hampshire for social services information. Conducted in partnership with Public Service Company of New Hampshire, 2-1-1 NH is
sponsored by the Citizens Bank Foundation, Exeter Hospital, New
Hampshire Charitable Foundation, and the State of New Hampshire. The service also lists volunteer opportunities throughout the state.

|
Information and referral specialists at 2-1-1 NH fielded 68 calls from Hillsborough County residents about heating fuel bill payment assistance between 9/11/08 and 10/11/08, up from 15 calls the previous month.

Housing coalition forum well received; Milford session slated for November 19
|
In September, nearly 200 people turned out at Daniel Webster College for a Greater Nashua Workforce Housing Coalition forum that examined how local development decisions are driving young people out of New Hampshire. The session featured a film, "Communities and Consequences," which followed demographer Peter Francese as he crossed the state and documented the fallout from a growing demographic imbalance. The coalition is presenting the forum on November 19 at the Amato Center for the Performing Arts (housed at the Souhegan Valley Boys & Girls Club) in Milford on November 19. Sponsored by Milford Rotary, the event will kick off with a reception at 5:15 PM, followed by the program from 5:45 to 7:30 PM. RSVP to Mary Balsama by November 17, 603-673-4360.

Volunteer.
|
Help families stay warm The Governor's "StayWarm NH" initiative is looking for volunteers to help weatherize low-income homes before winter hits. About 400 crew leaders with construction or basic home maintenance experience are needed, as are less skilled volunteers. For more information, contact Kara Swedlow, 603-271-7211.
Free tax prep training The Greater Nashua Asset Building Coalition is offering free income tax
preparation training to individuals who volunteer to assist
low-to-moderate income area residents with their federal returns during
the upcoming tax season. After completing a self-paced online class in
IRS-certified tax preparation software, volunteers will help taxpayers
with their returns at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance sites in Greater
Nashua. To sign up or obtain information, contact United Way's Ray Peterson, 603-882-4011.
