As Congress debates and votes on the DREAM Act in the coming days, we urge our legislators to not only vote yes on the DREAM Act, but to also continue to fight for the fair provisions that have already been stripped from the original version of the bill. The DREAM Act is an effective step in addressing our nation's broken immigration system- providing a pathway to citizenship and the opportunity for youth who have grown up in this country to pursue a higher education or serve in the military. As "The DREAM Act of 2010" (S. 3992) comes to the floor of both chambers of Congress, we call on you to fight for the DREAM Act, and furthermore, to champion reinstating important elements of the bill: - Return the cutoff age to 35, ensuring that many of those who began fighting for the DREAM Act ten years ago can also be included in the bill. What should matter is not how old the DREAMer is today, but how old the DREAMer was when they came to this country.
- Seek a more efficient pathway to citizenship - one which takes less than the 12 year minimum wait under this bill.
- Allow a grace period beyond one year for submission of applications to accommodate administrative barriers and limited access to legal services.
Political posturing has stood in the way of solving our nation's immigration problems for long enough. The DREAM Act presents an opportunity to begin a process of bipartisan cooperation necessary to move our country forward over the coming years. Whether for the thousands of DREAMers living in the shadows, for the economic infusions of talent and revenue, or for the benefits to our military's recruitment objectives, vote yes on the DREAM Act, and continue to stand up for the rights of young, talented immigrants not represented in the bill's current form. Call and write your representatives in Congress today, and tell them to support the DREAM Act: http://www.senate.gov/ http://www.house.gov/ You may phone the United States Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121. A switchboard operator will connect you directly with your U.S. Senator and U.S. House Representative at your request. Thank you for your support! Latinos Progresando
