'CON RAÍCES SIN PAPELES' FREE Fall Tour
Latino and immigrant issues in the spotlight

Con Raices Sin Papeles Video
( Click to see a short clip of the play)

CSRP_audienceWith eight productions under their belt and over a dozen shows performed all around the Chicago metropolitan area, Teatro Americano, a community theater company focused on putting contemporary Latino and immigrant issues in the spotlight-- continues to deliver authentic quality stories. This year's October production of Con Raíces Sin Papeles debuted in Little Village's renowned Catedral Cafe through collaboration with VillArte's Little Village Arts Festival.

While the actors set the stage and the audience filled the room, you couldn't help but feel like you were "home"-- watching a telenovela with your family. While some walked to the kitchen to replenish their empty cup of coffee, others remained fascinated as they witnessed their parents' stories unravel before their eyes.

"Teatro Americano and Latinos Progresando would like to thank Catedral Café and VillArte for helping make this performance of Con Raíces Sin Papeles a great success!"

As the night progressed and the performance came to an end, the cast received a standing ovation from the audience members who packed the house for the night. The performance was immediately followed by an interactive talk-back discussion with the actors. The audience members were eager to know what inspired the play and where they obtained the story from.

The College Bound Youth Group
This is what happened at the first Youth Civic Leadership Network

On October 14, 2010, Latinos Progresando, in collaboration with BUILD and Chicago Commons, kicked off our Youth Civic Leadership Network (YCLN) initiative. Students from Benito Juarez, Cristo Rey, Curie, and Farragut High School came together to work on a project aimed at tackeling a social issue at the YMCA Street Intervention building in Pilsen...

THE MURAL PROJECT WAS A GREAT SUCCESS!

On, July 31st, LP kicked-off its first mural project, in cooperation

with independent Pilsen artist Pablo Serrano and Pros Art Studio
artist Delilah D. Salgado. Serrano and Salgado completed an outline of
the mural, which combines traditional muralism with modern
graffiti techniques, facilitating interaction across generations and
across traditionally disparate schools of art. Neighborhood members
were invited to pick up a brush and help complete
the project.
The mural was received enthusiastically in Pilsen,
and  every
Saturday featured music from Fearless Radio's DJ Oscar Garcia, as
well as
food prepared by LP staff and volunteers.

The mural project was a great success; dozens
of friends, children, and community members assisted in completing the
project. The mural received positive press coverage in city-wide
newspaper La Raza and a cover story in the August 9, 2010 issue of
Hoy.
