Teatro Americano presents to Young Neighbors in Action
A presentation touching on the topics of stereotypes, culture, and social justice, presented three original skits to introduce each topic. The skits designed to begin a discussion on Latinos stereotypes, Mexican culture, and social justice. The workshop was concluded with Teatro Americano youth leaders facilitating a discussion about social justice that included information about the DREAM Act and how youth everywhere can become agents for social change.
Young Neighbors in Action, is an exciting, integrated service-learning experience for parish and school teams of older youth and adultsthat came to Chicago from the surrounding states of: Ohio, Iowa, Wisconsin, and Southern Illinois to learn about social justice issues affecting other communities.
The workshop highlighted isssues concerning the immigrant community which go unnoticed outside of the Latino community. This gave the youth the opportunity to discuss these issues with each other and their peers back home. The group left the workshop with more knowledge and awareness on the topics of stereotypes, the Latino culture, and social justice acts such as the DREAM Act! |
| Summer Program | | | Save the Date: final performance on August 6th
Our After School Matters summer program is continuing with great success! Teatro Americano has been working with 15 Pilsen, LIttle Village, and Back of the Yards youth to develop their theatrical, writing, production skills. The program proviceds these students with a much needed alternative to the many negative influences of summer vacation. Through interviews with their parents and peers, roundtable discussions, and interactive excercises, our youth leaders have developed the plot for the final theatrical performance. Central themes include identity crisis's, and struggles of Latinos in America. The script will be finalized by the end of the week! Look out for updates and details about the August 6th performance! |
Latinos Progresando Launches Mural Project
| | Work has begun on our first mural in Pilsen!
Latinos Progresando is excited to work on its first mural! The wall located at 19th Street and Carpenter was generously donated by one of our legal services clients--Juan Carlos Espinoza. This project is a collaboration led by Pablo Serrano, and youth from Pros Arts Studio, and LP. Youth artists will help transform this wall--once filled with gang-related graffiti--into a mural that promotes our historical Latino culuture embeded in Pilsen. Work crews are currently preparing the site for our youth to begin painting. Look for updates about the mural's official unveiling in August, 2010!

Thank you to interns Colleen and Carmela!
This is the final week of Colleen Burger and Carmela Balice's internship. We're sorry to see them go, but greatful for all of their help. Here is what they had to say about their experiences: "Over the last few weeks, I have had the privilege of working at Latinos Progresando. When I first arrived in La Villita, I was slightly apprehensive; I worried that it was going to take a while to become fully accepted into the community. However, after the first day I realized how warm, accepting, and driven the Little Village schools, community, and organizations all are, and Latinos Progresando is no exception. From group birthday parties to staff meetings, the LP team has included and treated me as an equal and valued member of their community from the very first day. Because of the close-knit feeling of the office, I feel that the organization as a whole is able to make greater strides towards its goals, like the advancement of the DREAM Act and Teatro Americano. LP has provided my first experience in non-profit organizations, and its model has helped to show me how important a group spirit is when pursuing a goal that will benefit the entire community." -- Colleen Burger "My experience at Latinos Progresando has been a new and positive one. It has been my first internship experience with a non-profit organization and I was able to gain a lot of new knowledge. I have been able to understand more clearly how the non-profit world functions. There are constantly little projects that need to be done and sometimes things do not go as planned. Every day is not structured the same. Someone working in this field must be flexible, personable, and understanding which are qualities I know I can benefit from in my future career as a teacher. Everything that Latinos Progresando does within the community is very inspiring and I would love to continue working with a organization with similar principles. Inspiring my future students to work towards social justice is something I hope to also incorporate into my future classroom and by working with this program I have gained a deeper appreciation for programs like Latinos Progresando." -- Carmela Balice |
Voces/Voices a gateway to professionals Latino success stories.
Introduced this summer, Voces/Voices is a speaker series that gives prominent Latino leaders a platform to share their personal stories of success and create a pipeline between professional and aspiring professionals. It also aims to make our successful Latino community aware of their obligation to utilize their skills, resources, and educational achievements to create a positive change in the Latino community at large.
Our first speaker Daisy De La Cruz, is the President and Marketing Maven of De La Croix Media. Ms. De La Cruz spoke to Latinos Progresando staff and volunteers about her experiences as a young successful Latina business leader, and importance of pursuing one's dreams. She reminds us "that [we] can accomplish anything [we] set [our] mind to." She's living proof. Thank you Ms. De La Cruz! |
