Community Forum Update Forum on Raids and Detentions Draws Crowd
The nearly 150 attendees of Latinos Progresando's October 30 community forum entitled "Know Your Rights: Raids and Detentions" emphasized the pressing need for accurate information about immigrants' legal rights. Community members gathered at Universidad Popular for an engaging presentation by panelists Marselina Gonzalez of Latinos Progresando and Julissa Ruiz of Katz Law Office. The event featured the film "Know Your Rights" by the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles (CHIRLA).
Latinos Progresando would like to thank its community partner Universidad Popular for graciously hosting the forum!
Stay tuned for more information about November's Community Forum on family reunification and admissibility bars for immigrants who have left the country!
_____________________________________________________________________________ Advocacy Update: Joliet Raid Terrifies Community on Halloween
The day after LP's community forum on raids and detentions, Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided a Joliet workplace, arresting 23 adults from the Chicago area. The raid targeted employees of a staffing company providing day laborers to warehouses throughout the city. A study released the same day by the National Counsel of La Raza and the Urban Institute documents the harmful effects of immigration raids on children, finding that for every two adults arrested in immigration raids, one child loses critical material and psychological support.

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a proposal last week which will likely require all legal permanent residents carrying "green cards" (permanent resident cards) without an expiration date to replace their current cards.
Green Cards issued between 1979 and 1989 do not have an expiration date. These cards will become invalid 120 days after the new rule takes effect!
For more information or to apply for a new green card, contact the Legal Services Department at Latinos Progresando at (312) 850-0572.
