Advocacy Update
Dreams Deferred for Now

Last week's Senate vote on the DREAM Act fell eight votes short of the 60 needed for the bill to move forward for debate in the Senate.

Latinos Progresando thanks Senator Richard Durbin for his tireless leadership as the DREAM Act's sponsor, and Senator Barack Obama for his continued support of the Act. LP also congratulates Republican Senators Brownback, Coleman, Craig, Snowe, Collins, Hagel, Hatch, Hutchison, Lott, Lugar, and Martinez  on transcending the partisan immigration debate to support policy that provides opportunities for immigrant youth.

Thank you to everyone who called, e-mailed, and wrote their Senators in support of this crucial legislation. While this is likely the last time the DREAM Act will be introduced in the Senate this year, we will continue to support the DREAM Act and Senator Durbin in his efforts to make students' dreams a reality.

Important Legal Immigration Services Update
Replace your green card now!

U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) announced a proposal last week which will likely require all legal permanent residents carrying "green cards" (permanent resident cards) without an expiration date to replace their current cards.

Green Cards issued between 1979 and 1989 do not have an expiration date. These cards will become invalid 120 days after the new rule takes effect!

For more information or to apply for a new green card, contact the Legal Services Department at Latinos Progresando at (312) 850-0572.
