Advocacy Update: SSA's No-Match Letter Plan Deterred!

Justice Prevails: The Social Security Administration (SSA) will NOT implement its plan to send thousands of No-Match letters to

employers this week!

On Friday (8/31/07), a federal judge issued a temporary restraining order against the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and the SSA, prohibiting the agencies from implementing the new rule regarding No-Match letters, which would affect over 1.4 million workers. The restraining order is the immediate result of a lawsuit filed by the AFL-CIO, ACLU, NILC, and labor organizations on August 30, charging that the new DHS rule would lead to massive firings of legally authorized workers. (For more information on the new DHS rule, click here.

A hearing on the case is scheduled for October 1. The SSA will not be able to send out the No-Match letters until the court issues a decision following the October 1st hearing date. This decision represents a temporary victory for immigrant rights advocates, but the need for accurate information and coordinated action persists!

Green Cards issued between 1979 and 1989 do not have an expiration date. These cards will become invalid 120 days after the new rule takes effect!
