Latinos Progresando Assists a Record Number of Clients with Legal Immigration Services In Anticipation of July 30 Immigration Fee Increase!
|
|
Due to the upcoming fee increase for filing most US Citizenship and Immigration Services petitions--effective July 30-- LP's Legal Services Department has responded to an unprecedented volume of clients in July. In the last week alone, the Legal Services team has helped approximately 80 new clients, and filed over 50 new citizenship applications and immigration petitions for relatives. The waiting area in our Pilsen office has been filled to capacity every day. In response to this need, the Legal Services Department has expanded its hours. This weekend the office will be open from 8:30 a.m. -3 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, in order to process the last applications before the fee increase takes effect. We are proud to be one of the only nonprofit immigration services organizations in Chicago that will continue serving new clients until the last day before the fee increase. The recent surge in client applications demonstrates our community's urgent need for high-quality, low-cost legal immigration services, which are at the heart of LP's mission.

Latinos Progresando Continues to Fight for Passage of the DREAM Act this Year!
Latinos Progresando staff met with representatives of the office of Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) this week, to discuss our ongoing commitment to the DREAM Act. Durbin's office applauded LP's grassroots activism on behalf of the DREAM Act, and urged community members to continue to demonstrate to the public that the time for the DREAM Act is NOW! Stay tuned for more information on an upcoming LP Community Forum on the DREAM Act! Members of the LP community will also be distributing information on the DREAM Act at the Teatro Americano performance at Fiesta del Sol, today and tomorrow (see above).
All supporters of this important bill must make sure that the Senate knows that our community continues to follow the progress of the DREAM Act.
Call your Senators at the numbers below:
Senator Richard Durbin (202) 224-2152 Senator Barack Obama (202) 224-2854
Here is a sample of what you might say: "Hello, my name is ___________ and I want to express my continued support for DREAM Act. I urge you to do everything possible to ensure the DREAM Act's passage this year. Providing immigrant youth with educational and employment opportunities is important to my community here in Chicago. I want to thank the Senator for his understanding that our young people shouldn't have to wait any longer to have brighter futures. Thank you."
