KDIGO Reports on CKD Staging and Prognosis Project
Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) presented a special session on Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD), definition, staging, and prognosis during the National Kidney Foundation's 2010 Spring Clinical Meetings.

The KDIGO Data Consortium, led by evidence review teams from the University of Groningen in The Netherlands, and Johns Hopkins University in the US, presented its initial findings during KDIGO's fall Controversies Conference, where more than fifty cohorts with more than 1.5 million study participants submitted data for review. In the last six months, the consortium has reviewed the collection of data relevant to the topic of CKD diagnosis and prognosis.

The major findings from the Controversies Conference were:

·    Emphasize classification by cause, if known, in addition to

     stage
·    Add albuminuria stages, in addition to Glomerular Filtration
Rate (GFR) stages [Albumin-to-Creatinine Ratio (ACR) >
     30mg/g, 30-300 mg/g and >300 mg/g]
·    Subdivide CKD Stage 3 into two stages (GFR 30-44 and 45-
     59ml/min/1.73m2)

Poor Preparation Puts Many Dialysis Patients at Risk

Patients with failing kidneys who are well prepared for dialysis when the time comes are much more likely to survive their first year of using the blood-cleansing machines, new findings presented at the National Kidney Foundation's (NKF) Spring Clinical Meetings show.

The investigators also found that most of the nearly 200,000 patients in their study were not prepared; 59% hadn't met a single one of the NKF's three goals for dialysis initiation.

Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances will be Permitted June 1, 2010

The Office of the Federal Register made available an Interim Final Rule with Request for Comment from the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) entitled, "Electronic Prescriptions for Controlled Substances." The rule revises DEA regulations to provide practitioners with the option of transmitting prescriptions for controlled substances electronically. The regulations also permit pharmacies to receive, dispense, and archive these electronic prescriptions. The regulations are an addition to, not a replacement of, the existing rules. The regulations provide pharmacies, hospitals, and practitioners with the ability to use modern technology for controlled substance prescriptions while maintaining the closed system of controls on controlled substance.

The official rule may be viewed at the Federal Register Web Site. This rule has been classified as a major rule subject to Congressional review. The effective date is June 1, 2010. However, at the conclusion of the Congressional review, if the effective date has been changed, the Drug Enforcement Administration will publish a document in the Federal Register to establish the actual effective date or to terminate the rule.

The Rhode Island Board of Pharmacy commented that Rhode Island laws will permit the electronic transmission of controlled substances on that date as well, as the laws specifically reference the Code of Federal Regulations.
