School News

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

At the start of this year, I wrote about all the changes on campus: nine new faculty members, four new portables, a growing enrollment and updated playground facilities. We continue to see changes, particularly in faculty and staff. Jenny Waddell, first grade teacher on leave and Maya Giamona, second grade teacher on leave, will not be returning next year as expected. Their resignations were regretfully accepted, but they were for all the right reasons, and I hope to see them back at Las Lomitas some day.

Another change is that Beverley St. John, our office secretary for the past 12 years, is retiring at the end of this month. We will miss her smile and attention to detail. We'll especially miss her wonderful sense of humor ~ particularly around Halloween time! We have posted the position and will be conducting interviews beginning next week. Hopefully, we will have a replacement prior to her departure on April 30th, but if not, we'll have a temporary secretary fill in until we find the right person. We wish Beverley all the best, and I'm sure she has many happy hours on the golf course ahead of her!

Until next time,

Sue Sartor

Principal

Food Safety Alert

Many students bring pre-packaged seaweed to school for lunch or snack. Inside the package there is a small packet of silica gel that might be mistaken for candy or topping for the seaweed. Please remove this silica gel packet before sending the seaweed to school with your child. Thank you.

PTA News

Fun Friday Volunteers Needed!  Do you have any time on Fridays from 11:45 a.m. - 1:15 p.m.? Please consider volunteering with other 1st-3rd grade parents on the playground for "Fun Fridays" at Las Lomitas.  One child described this as "the highlight of their week" and another said it was "like a carnival".  Come see what the fun is about!  We do obstacle courses, play capture the flag, fun jump rope games and more.  Contact Mehridith Venverloh ([email protected]) for more info, or just meet us on the "big kids playground" on Friday.

If you'd like to volunteer to support one of the many events and programs the PTA sponsors each year, contact Cindy Tipton ([email protected]).  We have volunteer opportunities to suit almost everyone's interest and availability.

Did you remember to order your Memory Book?????  There is now a binder in the office of all orders we have received to date.  If you have questions or a problem please contact Kristin Spindt ([email protected]).   Thanks you in advance for your cooperation.

GRANDPARENTS' DAY REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN

Registration is open for Grandparents' Day 2012, to be held on the morning of Friday, June 1st at Las Lomitas!  This Foundation event is a favorite... grandparents who have attended in the past have loved meeting the teachers, participating in fun activities, and getting to know each other.  Invitations were mailed last week to members of the Grandparents' Group who have grandchildren in grades K-3, so please check with the grandparents in your family to make sure they received an invite, and to encourage them to register soon at http://www.llef.org/gpday

Registration closes on May 4th.  Extra invitations are coming home in today's Monday envelopes, and available in the school office, in case you'd like to send one yourself.  We can't wait to celebrate with the Las Lomitas grandparents!

Challenge Success Courses

Research-Based Parent Education Courses from Challenge Success:

How much help is too much when it comes to homework?

How do I decide which extracurricular activities are best for my kid?

Is it okay for my 13-year-old to be on Facebook every day?

If you're not sure how to answer these questions, you're not alone.  At Challenge Success, we hear regularly from parents who are trying to be the best parents they can be, but who aren't always sure what to do.  Our first series of classes, Raising Well-Balanced Children in a Fast-Paced World, is now available in one of our in-person workshops and online. If you are the parent of an elementary or middle school-aged child and are wondering how to raise healthier, happier kids and help your family feel more connected, then these are the classes for you.

Our interactive online course allows you to work at your own pace or you may join us in person for a six week workshop.  Our next course begins at Stanford on April 25th.  Please visit our website at www.challengesuccess.org for more information.
