School News

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

Parent/Teacher conferences are this week, which means minimum day dismissal. The flag pole area will be especially congested. Thank you in advance for:

  • Leaving pets at home
  • Staying in your car in the pick-up lane
  • Displaying your child's name tag in the windshield
  • Parking only in designated spaces
  • Being patient.

Kindergarten and first grade students will be clustered in designated areas at the flag pole, so please watch for signs. If you can walk, bike or bus to school on minimum days, it would help with traffic congestion.

The next Evening with the Principal is scheduled for this Wednesday, March 14th at 6:30 p.m. in the Library. It will be open forum for any topic you'd like to discuss. I look forward to seeing you there!

Update ~ the bathrooms have been working just fine all week!  Thank you for your support!

The following article is about one of our support programs for English Learners. We are very fortunate to have this class available for students who are limited-English proficient. Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Leong if you have questions. There is also a lot of information on the district's webpage under English Learners.

Until next time,

Sue Sartor

Principal

Tip of the week:  Do not park on the south side of Camino al Lago.  It blocks traffic from flowing smoothly and makes crossing dangerous.

What is The Language Lab?

Las Lomitas has a special classroom just for English Language Learners. Located in room 19, the Language Lab provides intensive English Language Development (ELD) lessons for all K-3 students who are working toward acquiring English proficiency.

Nearly 60 children attend our ELD program and speak native languages which include Korean, Spanish, Japanese, Mandarin, French, Portuguese, Tongan, Danish, Swedish, Italian, Farsi, Finnish and Vietnamese. We are a very international school community!

Teaching in the Language Lab is ELD specialist, Lesli Leong. Working alongside her are bilingual paraeducators Olivia Betancourth (Spanish), and Grete Santucci (Norwegian). Together they provide leveled small group instruction designed especially to meet the needs of English learners. Correlating with state ELD standards, the lessons focus on listening, speaking, reading and writing. Developing vocabulary and oral language skills are high priorities.

Our Language Lab provides a warm and friendly educational setting where English learners strengthen their English skills, make new friends, and learn alongside other language learners. It is one of the many important support programs here at Las Lomitas which help our students to thrive and succeed both socially and academically.

PTA News

Join the PTA Board!  Would you like to make a difference at Las Lomitas? Meet new parents?  Work with other parent volunteers and the school administration to plan enrichment programs for our children?  Have you been wondering how to get "more involved" at school?  We are looking for a couple parents to join the PTA Board next year. It is a wonderful opportunity to make a big impact for our children and school community.  Please contact Kelly Holzrichter (kellyh@sbcglobal.net) for more information.

Calling All Young Scientists!  It's time for Science Wonders!  Science Wonders is the Las Lomitas version of a Science Fair. The completely voluntary, non-competitive event is open to any Las Lomitas student. To participate, students should think of a question (I wonder...), look for an answer by experimenting or researching (I did...), and create a display with their findings (I learned...) to share with their friends and families. The displays will be presented in Cano Hall on wednesday, March 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. More information can be found at http://www.laslomitaspta.org/programs/sciencewonders.html and the packet at http://www.laslomitaspta.org/_documents/LLPTAScienceWondersPacket.pdf.  If you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Diana Sunshine, sunshine@onderdonk.net

ORDER YOUR LAS LOMITAS MEMORY BOOK ONLINE TODAY!  It's time to order your Memory Books (the books will be distributed the last week of school). Please use our new online ordering form at: www.laslomitaspta.org/programs/memorybook.html.  Books are $25 each if ordered by March 24th (books will be $30 each if ordered after March 24th).

JUNE 1st IS GRANDPARENTS' DAY AT LAS LOMITAS!

Grandparents' Day is an opportunity for children to share their Las Lomitas experience with their grandparents for a morning.  This Foundation event is a favorite...grandparents who have attended in the past loved meeting the teachers, participating in fun activities, and getting to know other grandparents!   Grandparents' Day alternates each year between the two schools in our district, and this year's event is for grandparents of students in grades K-3 at Las Lomitas.  Now is a good time to let out-of-town grandparents know to mark their calendars for Friday, June 1st so they can start making travel plans!  We're also looking for parent volunteers to help out on the day of the event - please contact Julie Herlihy (julie_herlihy@yahoo.com) to sign up. Further details about Grandparents' Day will be announced soon via the Lion's Roar and the Grandparents' Group Newsletter.
