PARENT AND COMMUNITY INPUT INVITED

With Superintendent Eric Hartwig retiring at the end of this school year, the Governing Board has selected the search firm Leadership Associates to assist the District in finding a new superintendent.  To find the perfect fit for us, Leadership Associates will be on our campuses this week to hear from staff, parents, and community members about the qualities and skills the new superintendent of Las Lomitas Elementary School District ought to possess.  Hearing from the entire community is an important part of the superintendent search process.  Therefore, we hope you will be able meet with Mike Escalante and Peggy Lynch of Leadership Associates on Monday evening, March 5th, at 7 p.m. at Cano Hall (Las Lomitas) when they will hold an open forum for anyone to come and share their thoughts.  We hope that you can attend!

School News

Dear Las Lomitas Families,

March is here! There is a lot going on this month, so be sure to keep up by reading the Lion's Roar and classroom newsletters.

Parent-Teacher Conferences are March 14-16. This is an opportunity to have meaningful conversation about your child and discuss goals and expectations with the teacher.

Science Wonders is March 21st, but you should start thinking about this now. I especially like this event as it allows our students to engage in "wondering why." I always enjoy discovering what has captured the children's interest and the processes they use to answer the "why?" For those of you with children who are particularly interested in science, I recommend you explore the California Science Teachers Association website at http://www.cascience.org/csta/res_parents.asp for information about Family Science Nights. This site provides plenty of examples of hands-on science activities that families can do together. It may be a great way to spend some time "wondering" together!

Finally, I'd like to ask your help with a problem we've had on campus lately. Some students have been jamming the toilet in one of the boy's bathrooms, causing it to overflow. We've also found urine on the floor. One student has come forward, but it is evident that others are involved. Our maintenance team spent time and dollars over the break to repair the system. The teachers, yard supervisors, Efren, Ezekiel and I have been doing all we can to monitor the situation and stop this from happening. While this is primarily a 1st-3rd grade issue, I would appreciate all of you taking a few minutes to talk with your child about the importance of keeping our bathrooms clean and safe for all to use. It is a health and safety concern. I am confident that we will resolve this situation soon. Thank you in advance for your support and assistance with this matter.

Until next time,

Sue Sartor

Principal

Safety tip for the week:  Please teach your child how to fasten his/her own seat belt.  This will eliminate the need for the driver to step into the passing lane as well as expedite the flow in the pick-up lane.

WHAT DOES YOUR CHILD WONDER ABOUT? IT'S TIME FOR SCIENCE WONDERS!

Science Wonders is the Las Lomitas version of a Science Fair.  The completely voluntary, non-competitive event is open to any Las Lomitas student.  To participate, students should think of a question (I wonder...), look for an answer by experimenting or rresearching (I did...), and create a display with their findings (I learned...) to share with their friends and families.  The displays will be presented in Cano Hall on Wednesday, March 21 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.  More information can be found at http://www.laslomitaspta.org/programs/sciencewonders.html.  If  you have any questions or would like to volunteer, please contact Diana Sunshine, sunshine@onderdonk.net.

ORDER YOUR LAS LOMITAS MEMORY BOOK ONLINE TODAY!  It's time to order your Memory Books (the books will be distributed the last week of school). Please use our new online ordering form at: www.laslomitaspta.org/programs/memorybook.html.  Books are $25 each if ordered by March 24th (books will be $30 each if ordered after March 24th).

JUNE 1st IS GRANDPARENTS' DAY AT LAS LOMITAS!

Grandparents' Day is an opportunity for children to share their Las Lomitas experience with their grandparents for a morning.  This Foundation event is a favorite...grandparents who have attended in the past loved meeting the teachers, participating in fun activities, and getting to know other grandparents!   Grandparents' Day alternates each year between the two schools in our district, and this year's event is for grandparents of students in grades K-3 at Las Lomitas.  Now is a good time to let out-of-town grandparents know to mark their calendars for Friday, June 1st so they can start making travel plans!  We're also looking for parent volunteers to help out on the day of the event - please contact Julie Herlihy (julie_herlihy@yahoo.com) to sign up. Further details about Grandparents' Day will be announced soon via the Lion's Roar and the Grandparents' Group Newsletter.
