Where are you?
If you have any type of social media account, you've probably noticed the explosion of location-based applications, the service that allows you to post where you are and see where others are.
The popularity of location-based applications for social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter and Google+ have changed the way businesses and individuals are using social media to connect with customers and others.
Foursquare is a location-based application that allows users to post directly to Facebook and Twitter and encourages users to "check-in" from wherever they are, using their Smartphone. Users can see where their friends have checked-in, write reviews and receive tips about businesses, find nearby businesses, receive special offers and more.
At first, businesses were slow to embrace location-based applications such as foursquare because of their "game-like" features. As a game, a foursquare user collects virtual badges and points for checking in at different locations. However, as businesses began to realize that people were having fun using foursquare, they also realized there were some incredible marketing opportunities.
Perhaps one of the most important aspects of this type of location-based application is the review feature. As social media grows and people turn more and more to peer reviews and word of mouth marketing, peer reviews and tips can serve as a great marketing tool or a way to learn how to improve a business or product. From getting comments about weekly specials to learning about bad service, location-based applications offer unlimited potential for connecting customers with other customers or businesses with customers.
To take full advantage of location-based applications such as foursquare, it is necessary for businesses to create accounts and "claim" their businesses. Likewise, if you're the end user, in order to get deals, spread the word about someplace you love or hate, you need to set up an account and use it as well.
Whether you're personally into "checking-in" or not, it's important that every business owner be aware that these functions are available with social media and keep their eye on what others are saying about them and their business. It's always better to be safe than sorry!

Are you ready for some politics?
For more than 20 years, fans of Monday Night Football have sung along as Hank Williams Jr. opened the broadcast with "Are you ready for some football?"
But that Monday night tradition came to a sudden end this season after Williams made a comment comparing President Obama to Adolf Hitler. ESPN reacted quickly, parting ways with the country icon.
The Williams-ESPN incident clearly shows that political comments can have some serious consequences, particularly for those who typically aren't involved in politics.
Williams, of course, was well within his rights to say what he said, just as ESPN had every right to sever its ties with Williams and move in a different direction for its Monday Night Football theme. But the incident shows just how quickly a relationship can change in today's politically charged, politically correct times.
It should serve as a cautionary tale for everyone in the business world. One flippant remark or aligning yourself or your business with a controversial project or figure can affect your reputation and even your company's bottom line. Even a political contribution to a candidate may offend those who oppose that candidate.
Today, more than ever, as news travels at the speed of social media and everyone is a potential citizen journalist, it's crucial to proceed with caution. Always consider how your political comments or political actions could impact your reputation and your company's standing.

Make the most of the Holidays with your PR efforts
Holiday season is here (it's OK if you groan at the thought!). Chances are your business or organization is involved in a number of activities relating to the holiday season. This is an excellent opportunity to generate positive PR. No, we're not talking about inviting the media to your holiday party (and depending on your office party style, the PR may not be what you're hoping for). What we are talking about is letting the media know when you are doing something that will make a difference this season. Plus, you'll want to include the activities, and photos/videos, on your Facebook and Twitter accounts. Here are a few examples to give you an idea what we're talking about: - Do you hold an annual food drive that collects literally thousands of pounds of food? Send out a media alert for the day you're counting, boxing up and delivering the goods to a food pantry. Invite the media to come and cover the activity. Be sure to have a designated spokesperson who is well versed on the collection. Also, video tape some of the activity, or take photos, for your social media efforts.
- If your company president is well known and will be ringing bells for The Salvation Army or doing something similar, let the media know. Again, include it in your social media.
- Is your department or company serving a holiday meal at a shelter? It also may be an opportunity for positive publicity.
There are two caveats to this advice: - Do not do something for others to simply generate media coverage. Do it because it's the right thing to do.
- If you are doing this activity at a location other than your business or organization, be sure to clear it with the agency you're working with. They may have guidelines relating to media coverage and they may offer to help with the PR.
From all of us at Leonard & Finco Public Relations, Inc., however you celebrate the holidays, make it a good one! |
