SCCA Block

Make it Easy, Make it Fun Socials - No Boring Meeting!

The St. Louis Region Monthly
MAKE IT EASY, MAKE IT FUN Socials

The St. Louis Region SCCA Make it Easy, Make it Fun Socials at
Spazio's,
  EVERY 3rd Monday EACH MONTH,
12931 Lackland Road, 314-576-0400.

There are NOT meetings, but Socials!
 They are EASY & FUN!

So... You say, " what is a social?"
Well it is NOT A BORING MEETING. It is face to face time for friendship with others who enjoy having and nurturing a sports car addiction.  It is 12 steps of how to grow that addiction with current and possibly new friends.

It is a "hello", it is a "what tires are you going to use this season?" It is a place to talk about your new car, or ask others how to set up your shocks. Or it is a time and place to invite that co-worker that is interested in cars to meet others with the same interests.

Think of it as a time and place to come, maybe have dinner, maybe have a drink or a cookie, maybe bring the kids (of all ages) and see some car friends.

It is informal. No dress code, no membership required, just a friendly smile and some car talk.

The Region will offer a BIT of info IF anyone wants it or needs it. But, we promise NO BORING MEETING JUNK. Mostly it is a place to come and do a little bench racing, enjoy some friendship, maybe see an old friend or maybe even make a new friend.  So come on by on the 3rd Monday of each month.

April 19, 2010
"Make it Easy, Make it Fun with STL Region SCCA" - Social, Dinner (if you chose, come right from work, Spazio's is open all afternoon).

We will MAKE IT EASY to learn how to do a PDX with the St. Louis Region PDX Committee presenting (in the conference room)
What is a PDX? ? and how can I do it?

May 17, 2010
"Make it Easy, Make it Fun with STL Region SCCA" - Social, Dinner (if you chose, come right from work, Spazio's is open all afternoon).

We will MAKE IT EASY to learn all about Data Aquisition with Dave Jones presenting (in the conference room)
 Fun with Data Aquisition?

From Dave Jones, Data Acquisition Presenter.  We will set a small course in the parking lot at Spazio's, install a data logger in someone's car, and have them drive slow laps around the course, trying different brake points, turn-in points, etc. Then we will take that data and open in on the screen for everyone to see. We will go through the easy steps we would use if this were an autocross or a road course, looking for clues about the car, the driver, and how to improve each.
When we're done, you'll see how easy it is to install and gather data, and how valuable data can be to improve at the track. If there is interest, we'll hold more advanced sessions on other evenings.

The Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving School - Car control instruction designed to provide teen drivers with accident avoidance skills and knowledge. It's not just about Driving, It's about Living....

The leading cause of death among 13-19 year olds in the US is from a motor vehicle crash.

62% of teenage passenger deaths in 2004 occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager.

Teenagers cause 2.5 million accidents per year.

In 2007 that resulted in over 6,000 deaths of teens.

If you have a teen driver at home or know someone who does, then those sobering statistics should be of concern. Recent and well publicized national stories have brought to light the tragedy of teen injury and death caused by traffic accidents. The stories often mention how the teen driver "lost control and over-corrected..." causing a tragic accident of some kind.

The Tire Rack Street Survival Teen Driving School will be a great community effort for the St.Louis Region, SCCA
Program News
STL Club Racing Program News - from  the Committee
Program Manager, Bryon Prokopf

Thanks to everybody who came out to our Regional/National/IT Tour at Gateway on March 27-28.  Our entry count was a little light and the weather didn't cooperate very well with the rain on Sunday but despite all this the worker count was high and some fun was had.  Despite the light turnout there was still some good racing in some classes and some great individual drives in the tricky and changing conditions on Sunday.

We would like to extend a big thank you to Cobalt Brakes for their sponsorship this race weekend.  Phil Gumpert and Brad Lewis won a complete set of Cobalt brake pads and every competitor received a coupon for off good for up to four sets of pads.

We are looking forward to our next event.  Our Double Drivers School/Double Regional with the Time Trials at Gateway on May 14-16 is approaching quickly.  Registration is currently open for competitors and workers at www.dlbracing.com  Students will be able to complete the school and both regional races and leave the weekend having completed the requirements for a Regional race license.  The Double Regional portion of the weekend will be run entirely on Sunday, so a racer can come out for one day and have 4 track sessions with 2 of them being races.  If you are interested in instructing, you can contact our Chief Instructor Dave Jones at [email protected]  We will be giving away four complete sets of Cobalt Brakes during the weekend.  We will give away two sets to registered students and two sets to instructors.  As was the case in March, every competitor will leave with a coupon for off good for up to four sets of brakes.

Precision Driving Xperience (PDX)

All of us have done the burn-out at a red light, or taken that curve at more than the "suggested speed," imagining ourselves as racers while never leaving our street cars. With these events, you don't have to dream anymore!

PDX's are about you, the driver. Plenty of seat time, plenty of individual instruction and a ton of driving exercises make up these events held at Gateway Raceway on the 1.6 mile Road Course; both of which is designed to educate you and make you more confident behind the wheel, both on the track and on the street.

A Precision Driving Experience (PDX) is an opportunity to work with an instructor and get practice in car handling and precision driving in your own car on the 1.6-mile road course at Gateway International Raceway. This is a non-competitive, un-timed event. Drivers are grouped by prior experience. For safety, drivers are required to wear a helmet, long sleeve shirt and long pants.

The Novice School was very successful and 99% of the participants returned the next day for an event. We had our first event on March 14th with 104 drivers...lots of Novices.  The event did end rather unexpectedly so was not counted as a points event. We had several new people join the SCCA at the Tech O Rama plus two more at Event 2 on March 27. The March 27th event had 134 drivers!  It was a great success.

The EVO school was a great success, thanks to Andty Hohl for all his work.

Tech O Rama Report from Chairman, Dave Jones

Thank you to everyone who attended the St. Louis Region SCCA Tech-O-Rama event March 20th. Every one of you contributed to the enjoyment of the day.

A very special "thank you" goes to Jim Lynch and all his employees, without whom this event would never have taken place.  Jim allowed us free use of his magnificent facility; then he provided a discounted rate for the DynoJet and Omer Phelps(operator/tuner); and THEN he provided the hot dogs, chips and soda. You can guess what all that was worth! You can thank him by shopping at and sending your friends to Lynch Shooting Sports if they are looking for guns, ammo, and hunting and camping accessories. Check out www.LynchHummer.com . Thank You Jim!!

What would the event be without our sponsors?  A huge thank you to Terry Gilvin of Hoosier Tire Midwest and Andie Lin of Cobalt Friction Technologies, for their very generous donations of tires and brakes.  Also a big thank you to PDX Sponsors: Solo Performance Specialties, McDonough-Whitlow, P.C., Izzy's Custom Cages, Spazios, Takata, Adventure Performance of St. Louis, LKQ Corporation, Dad's Auto Service, Lynch Hummer, and PhotoMotion for participating in our event!!

Thank you also to MBJ Machine for the engine knowledge and information they brought and shared; Angelo Zarra with ANZE Engineering who couldn't attend but provided the ultimate suspension tuning guide; Jeremy Lucas with FASTtech Limited for his data knowledge that he shared through our data presentation; and Dan Govero who presented the Rolling Hills Resort / Race Facility information to many of those attending.

Other raffled products were contributed by: Toni McDonough with McDonough-Whitlow, P.C.  (aluminum air tank), Bruce Stephens with Dad's Auto Service (two four-wheel alignments), Autowerks of America for the Show 'N' Go license plate frame, and Rob Phelan with PhotoMotion (two 2010 DVDs and a future picture of the winners in their car at an event).  Thank You all so much!

We would also like to thank all the St. Louis Region programs for their support and contributions: PDX chairman Jose Hernandez and their PDX ride-alongs, Solo chairperson April Schnardhorst and their Solo event entries, Club Racing chairman Bryon Prokopf and their Gateway Raceway pace car rides, and two free new memberships from the Membership Chairman Steve Slotten, and R.E. Diane Prokopf and the St. Louis Region Board of Directors.

One of our goals was to co-mingle the various car enthusiasts in the St. Louis Area. We all share the same appreciation for fast cars and great drivers, as was so clearly evident Saturday, whether it was the crowd watching cars on the dyno or race videos on the screen. Along with St. Louis Region SCCA members and guests, the Tech-O-Rama was attended by club members from Audi, BMW, Corvette, Honda/Acura, Lotus, Porsche, Viper, and the St. Louis Racing Fan Club to name a few. Many of these other clubs expressed their appreciation for being included and posted invitations before and rave reviews after the event on their own websites. We look forward to expanding these new friendships with all area car enthusiasts.

The cast of thousands who assisted, supported, and were cheerleaders for this event are too numerous for the available space. I'll apologize now for leaving someone out, but there are some who come to mind that made this event a success: Julia is irreplaceable, the poster-person for the ultimate club member. Nothing was too much for her, even dealing with me! Eileen Waters, who found time to help in-spite of her own responsibilities in too many other activities! Steve Scheifler, who with Randy, Bruce, Dana, and others provided corner weights and alignment info to dozens of drivers. Tech people Sarah, Ed, Chris, Steve, Bob, and others, who made ALL tech smooth and fun.

Jim Easley, Tim Weatherford, Daryl, Lee, Bob M, Robert, Omer and Kenny, Carol Cohn, Steve Slotten, Jose, April, and Bryon, Tom from Solo who worked all day and I don't know his last name! Damn, we have some great people in our club. And those in other clubs; John Palumbo from the Audi Club invested as much time as any of us because he believed in the goal. EVERY person who attended and assisted, thank you so much! We put the event together for YOU, and all of YOU made our effort worthwhile.

By the way, St. Louis Region gained TEN NEW MEMBERS Saturday. Welcome to the club!

Stephen White,                Steve Davis, Bradley Harris, Mike Pachangi, John Maloney Jr., Dan Shipley, Jerry L Bizzell, Sean Ryan, Clayton Owens, Dan Shipley, Jr.
