Make it Easy, Make it Fun
You won't believe how much the St. Louis Region has going on in events, news, reports and info for you?
Well, wait until you see this issue of Wheelspin. It has a HUGE amount of stuff just for you!
*************************************************************************************** The NEW St. Louis Region Monthly
MAKE IT EASY, MAKE IT FUN Socials The St. Louis Region SCCA is going to be holding monthly Make it Easy, Make it Fun Socials at Spazio's,
12931 Lackland Road, 314-576-0400. There are NOT meetings, but Socials!
They are EASY & FUN!
So... You say, " what is a social?"
Well it is NOT A BORING MEETING. It is face to face time for friendship with others who enjoy having and nurturing a sports car addiction. It is 12 steps of how to grow that addiction with current and possibly new friends. It is a "hello", it is a "what tires are you going to use this season?" It is a place to talk about your new car, or ask others how to set up your shocks. Or it is a time and place to invite that co-worker that is interested in cars to meet others with the same interests. Think of it as a time and place to come, maybe have dinner, maybe have a drink or a cookie, maybe bring the kids (of all ages) and see some car friends. It is informal. No dress code, no membership required, just a friendly smile and some car talk. The Region will offer a BIT of info IF anyone wants it or needs it. But, we promise NO BORING MEETING JUNK. Mostly it is a place to come and do a little bench racing, enjoy some friendship, maybe see an old friend or maybe even make a new friend. So come on by on the 3rd Monday of each month.

News from the Board of Directors
St. Louis Region Year End Awards.
There have been many fine recipients over the years of these awards. Each and everyone one of them should be proud to be a winner of one of them.
A couple of years ago SCCA introduced weekend memberships and made them mandatory for many of our programs. The memberships are designed to be temporary. Obviously they are designed to encourage people to try an event and join the region. One of our programs does not require membership in the region for entrants, although most of the core organizing group of that program are long time region members and the St. Louis Region is a Sponsor of that program.
Non-members may enter some of our events, weekend members may play at some of our events but the Yearly Annual Members are the members who we count on to step forward to lead our region and it's programs. They volunteer to organize events, manage programs, write newsletters, promote memberships, run the region, and support the very foundation of the St. Louis Region.
The BoD has decided that the year end awards should be awarded to annual yearly members of the region. The definition of an annual member has been added to the awards criteria.

SCCA Street Survival Event Chairman Found - Kevin Brown
The Board has found a person who wanted to take on this Event and Chair it for the region.
Kevin Brown is a Project Manager for Dell Computers and is active as a PDX Driver.
He contacted us and said "I am new to SCCA but feel very passionately about this event for teens. Last weekend we had funeral services for my brother in law. He was killed in a car accident in which his 17 year old son was driving. This touched our family in many ways. I had considered signing up my 17 year old daughter last year, this year it will happen." A HUGE THANKS to Kevin and what better way to honor his family and make a difference by helping with this event.
Current Committee constists of: Bob Mondschein, Jose Hernandez, Chuck DeProw, Dana Hullinger, Steve Slotten. But, more are needed so please email Kevin. Much of the organization and communication will be done by email as Kevin Travels for work and can get a lot done via email while sitting around airports and hotels while on the road.
A date/location search is in progress now.
The Tire Rack Street Survival® Teen Driving School - Car control instruction designed to provide teen drivers with accident avoidance skills and knowledge.
It's not just about Driving, It's about Living.... · The leading cause of death among 13-19 year olds in the US is from a motor vehicle crash. · 62% of teenage passenger deaths in 2004 occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager. · Teenagers cause 2.5 million accidents per year. · In 2007 that resulted in over 6,000 deaths of teens. If you have a teen driver at home or know someone who does, then those sobering statistics should be of concern. Recent and well publicized national stories have brought to light the tragedy of teen injury and death caused by traffic accidents. The stories often mention how the teen driver "lost control and over-corrected..." causing a tragic accident of some kind.
The Tire Rack Street Survival® Teen Driving School will be a great community effort for the St.Louis Region, SCCA |

We are in need of new EZ Up canopies, used on our corners at GIR.. We are currently in the process of taking stock of what we need and looking at different options of purchasing. We will probably need to buy new ones as the ones we have have been repaired numerous times and are in a state where they just can't be patched up anymore. We will probably look at buying 12 new ones. We are going to explore options of ways to subsidize the costs. Maybe there are members or their businesses that might want to purchase one and have their company name printed on it. Good advertising! If interested, contact Program Manager, Bryon Prokopf, br_prok81@hotmail.com

STL Solo News - from the Committee
Program Manager, April Schnardthorst.
Dear Fellow Autocrossers,
Well, we're finally coming up on our first event for 2010. I figure most of you are anxious to get back "in the seat". New this year, when you register online, the registration system will verify your membership and force you to get a weekend membership if you need it. When it does that, it will transmit that information to the national office so you DON"T have to sign any weekend membership documents the day of the event...YAY! More reasons to pre-register.
Have you all seen the *new Solo website* at stlsolo.org <http://www.stlsolo.org>? If not, why not? We hope it is much more useful that what we previously had for you. Please contact the webmistress (oh yeah, that's me) if you have any questions, comments, constructive criticism, requests, etc....no complaints please :D If you have experience with Drupal theming, I would welcome a new theme for the website.
Finally but not to be considered any less important, are you coming to the *Tech-O-Rama on March 20th*?? Why would you come, what is it, where is it, and what does it cost?? Well, not only can you get all these answers on our new website, but I'll save you some time but telling you that it will be a not-to-miss event to help kick off the St. Louis Region SCCA season! We will have Dyno testing for cars available for $45 (chance to win free test), annual tech for Solo and PDX, membership information, other program representatives so you can get more information, several local car clubs, and giveaways including memberships, event entries, brakes, tires, and more! It will be held on March 20th from 9am to 5pm (drawings at 4pm, need not be present to win) at the Jim Lynch Hummer dealership in Chesterfield. It's completely FREE and we will even be serving FREE hot dogs and drinks and everyone attending will get a free gift. This is a great opportunity for you to find out more about the other SCCA programs as well as to bring your friends so they can see what we do and some of the cool cars we race! If you are available to volunteer to help with the event in any capacity for any time during that day, please let us know!
We had 3 new people join Solo at the February social. , Regarding changes to Program committee/staff, personnel, etc., April Schnardthorst is the new SAC Chairperson and James Sarino has stepped down as Course Chief. We have Tom Cindrich and Kelly Smith co-chairing in his place..
We had the EVO school the 1st weekend in March . The Novice school is March 13. The day after the Novice school is our 1st points event, all entrants in the novice school are automatically entered into the points event. We will put on our 2nd points event later in March.
Because of lot availability our points season will end in August however, we will still have our traditional End-Of-Year event in September.
We have a request from a St. Charles County police officer to put on a charity event for Back-Stoppers. He has already found that there is interest among his fellow police officers. They will race their squad cars and will potentially allow some of our members to co drive their cars. We will ask an additional fee of the co-drivers which will go directly to charity. He has gotten 93.7 The Bull to provide free advertising for us. Lee Hanson will meet with him and ensure the advertising is directed at attracting new members and not spectators.
At this time, we are looking forward to working with the Board and other Programs for a promotional video. April Schnardthorst will attend the March BoD meeting to give details.
Our 3rd points event will take place in April with a total of 10 points events for the year. We hope to increase membership this year through several steps we are taking toward promotion, education, and making it more fun.
Thanks and let's get ready to have some fun! April Schnardthorst, Chief of Registration, SAC Chairperson

STL Rally News - from the 100 Acre Wood Committee
Program Manager, Tom vanHatten:

ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL EVENT - FEB. 26-27, 2010
The 2010 Rally in the 100 Acre Wood has come and gone, and is being hailed by competitors and fans as the best 100 Acre Wood yet!. We stated 47 teams on Friday from Steelville, Missouri, most them attempting to break Ken Block's four-year stranglehold on overall victory in the two-day Rally America National portion of the rally. However, when the 37 teams that survived the intense competition made it back to Salem on Saturday night, Ken Block and his codriver Alex Gelsomino emerged victorious, winning an unprecedented firth consecutive overall win in the rally.
2009 National Champion Travis Pastrana gave it his best, but fell by the wayside halfway through Saturday's stages with a broken rear suspension member at the Potosi Lions' Park super-special stage, handing the victory to Block. The win was the first for the Monster World Rally Team, whose Ford Fiesta gave Ford its first overall win in the US stage rally for the revived model, and the first Ford overall US win in over 10 years. Quebecois Antoine L'Estage and Nathalie Richard finished just shy of Block in their Mitsubishi Evo X. The son-father team of Travis and Terry Hanson took Super Production class honors in a Subary WRX Sti, and Chris Duplessis and Catherine Woods won the 2WD class win in their Volkswagen Golf, finishing ahead of most of the AWD contingent at the event as well.
The win was the first for the Monster World Rally Team, whose Ford Fiesta gave Ford its first overall win in the US stage rally for the revived model, and the first Ford overall US win in over 10 years.
Local Rallyists fared well in the both the National and Regional portions of the rally. Codriver Kim DeMotte finished fourth in 2WD in the National with his driver, Gary Wiggin. In Regional action, John and Mark Huebbe finished second in Group 2 in both the Friday and Saturday regional rallies, and 2009 StL Region Rally Driver of the Year James Haas finished ninth in the Friday regional and third in the Saturday regional, with his wife, Caitlin, as his new codriver.
The real story of the weekend, however was the beautiful weather that graced south central Missouri, which was a stark contrast to the cloud, cold, and snow we've seen for the past several years. The weather brought out both volunteers and spectators in unprecedented numbers. At each Parc Expose and service area at the rally, crowds of spectators of 1000-1500 were seen. An average of 300 to 500 spectators were at the onstage spectator points, and for the most part were well behaved. The Potosi Lions' Park superspecial stage had a crowd estimated at around 2500 spectators! These numbers are unheard of at any stage rally in the United States! Anyone with a t-shirt or a commemorative pin from this rally as a true keepsake--we ran out of both over the weekend. This was an unbelievable weekend, both for US stage rallying, and for the 100 Acre Wood in particular.
A lot of people volunteered to make the rally work--and a lot of them were St. Louis Region members from club areas other than performance rally who did yeoman's work, particularly on Saturday. We're going to have to work hard to better this kind of performance, much less repeat it. That, however, is just what we're going to do.
We've already started work on the 2011 Rally on the 100 Acre Wood, and have some interesting and exciting additions to our event planned. A lot of this will involve what we can do for our spectators at super special stages, daily rally starts, service areas, and onstage spectator points, and it will be much more than just ordering more t-shirts and commemorative pins. Spectator interest in stage rallies, and maintaining it without sacrificing event safety, is now at the top of the priority list for our rally. It's a tall challenge to meet, and we'll need a lot of hands to meet it successfully. If you want to volunteer for next year's rally, now's as good a time as any to let us know. Contact any committee member from the list that can be found at the event website (www.100aw.org). Thanks for helping to make 2010 the best 100 Acre Wood rally ever, and we look forward to your help in 2011!

Promotional Brochures and Membership Forms
For a person new to SCCA, joining can be confusing. Select a membership type, decide what Region to belong too, and add up SCCA dues and the Region dues together (assuming the potential member has access to the dues list). And by the way what is a Region? To address this issue and simplify the process SCCA Promotional brochures and generic membership forms list a single price for each membership type, this price includes both SCCA and Region dues.
Who has to be a member?
Any competitor or competing team at any SCCA Club Racing, Rally, RallyCross, or Solo sanctioned event.
Any passenger in a Solo, RallyCross, or PDX/Time Trial competition car.
The SCCA portion of the Weekend membership fee is waived for passengers at Solo and RallyCross events who are not entered in the event as a driver.
Passengers in a RoadRally car do not have to be members, but is encouraged.
Anyone in a "hot" area at Club Racing or PDX/Time Trial event.
Impact of Membership Programs and Discounts Upon Region Dues.
The Member Referral and Weekend Membership discounts do NOT affect the Region dues payments.
The New Volunteer Membership program has reduced dues for both SCCA and Regions. For individual members SCCA receives $25, Regions receive $5. SCCA promotional brochures provide for generic dues payments to Regions regardless of the Region joined. The generic Region dues only apply to the first year of membership, after the first year the member pays specific to their Region. Generic Region dues for Individual memberships are $15 and Family memberships are $20.
Ordering Forms
Forms are no longer being automatically mailed when a sanction is issued. The automatic mailing of forms was intended to prime the pump, and not an ongoing process.
Anyone may order Weekend Membership or Volunteer Incentive Membership forms; there is no charge for forms. Forms may be ordered by: Calling Member Relations at 800-770-2055 Via email at membership@scca.com Region supply order form Ordering supplies online in the Member section of SCCA.com
As of April 1, 2010 National dues have been lowered (for an individual) to $65. St. Louis Region dues will be going up to $20 (from $15)on April 1, 2010 also. FYI - This is the first increase in St. Louis Region dues in over 20 years. If we had been increasing all along to keep up with inflation, dues would be $30. On the bright side, we will have 25% more Solos, 33% more PDX's including a Club Trials, and the Road Rally program has been restarted with several events on the schedule. Also, it looks like we will have at least one teen TireRack Street Survival School and there is a very good chance we will initiate a drifting program. Not to mention the monthly socials at Spazio's, an the expanded and improved email Wheelspin newsletter (also online at stlscca.org).
The list of businesses offering discounts to SCCA members can be found at http://www.scca.com/contentpage.aspx?content=81

SCCA Mid-West Division News |
St. Louis Region Member Wins Divisional Award
MIDIV SPIRIT OF SOLO AWARD
This year, the Midwest Solo Community lost a dear friend in Sam Scharnberg. With Sam, the solo community enjoyed years of leadership, guidance and friendship. Momma Sam molded our Divisional program and nurtured those in the wings.
A stone engraved with the following was presented to Sam's family. Kiersten, Tim and Michael were at the Midwest Convention banquet to receive this. Sam's husband< greg was not able to attend.
Emcee Donna Hill said "I am honored to present you with this stone symbolizing the rock and foundation that we - as individuals and as a community - all loved, honored and respected, your wife, your mother and your grandma."
The stone reads:
SAM SCHARNBERG
MIDIV SPIRIT OF SOLO AWARD
In memory of Sam Scharnberg, the MidWest Division SCCA solo community honors her for her vision and commitment to the solo program, her mentorship and, most important, her friendship. Her far-reaching contributions and example provide guidance and inspiration to those following, and those to come.
Donna went on to then present the FIRST Sam Scharnberg MiDiv Spirit of Solo Award.
Here is her presentation:
Several years before Sam "retired" as our Divisional Steward, she was contacted by a region who wanted to do a Divisional event - a region that had not done one for many years. Most of this region's leaders had moved or faded into occasional autocrossers. The solo chairman had not chaired a large event. Sam was concerned that she needed someone with a lot of experience to chair this region's Divisional effort. Sam contacted one of region's experienced soloists and offered the event if that person would chair it.
That person agreed as long as the assignment would include a co-chairman of a younger person who also had a passion for our solo program.
This person put together a team of the younger, new solo people AND the older solo people who had experience. He led that team to an event with new ideas and lots of experience that made it an excellent event, which won the Divisional of the Year.
Sam began looking for someone to mentor and teach all her years of solo knowledge. She found it in this person who showed how well he could handle this divisional event. He spent time with Sam and learned everything he could from her about what makes a great Divisional event and series.
He has been a recipient of the MiDiv Worker of the Year award. He has supported the Divisional Solo program exactly as Sam designed. Heck - he and his wife named their daughter Sam after someone very special to them. He has been a true mentor to me, personally. And I am HONORED to present this inaugural Sam Scharnberg Midiv Spirit of Solo Award to one of the most appreciative students Sam Scharnberg ever taught, Dave Whitworth.
Congratulations to Dave Whitworth, of the St. Louis Region SCCA as the 2009 winner of the MIDIV SPIRIT OF SOLO AWARD | |
