Make it Easy, Make it Fun
You won't believe how much the St. Louis Region has going on in events, news, reports and info for you?
Well, wait until you see this issue of Wheelspin. It has a HUGE amount of stuff just for you!
The NEW St. Louis Region Monthly
MAKE IT EASY, MAKE IT FUN Socials begin February 15, 2010 - 6pm Spazio's Westport! The St. Louis Region SCCA is going to be holding monthly Make it Easy, Make it Fun Socials at Spazio's,
12931 Lackland Road, 314-576-0400. There are NOT meetings, but Socials!
They are EASY & FUN!
So... You say, " what is a social?"
Well it is NOT A BORING MEETING. It is face to face time for friendship with others who enjoy having and nurturing a sports car addiction. It is 12 steps of how to grow that addiction with current and possibly new friends. It is a "hello", it is a "what tires are you going to use this season?" It is a place to talk about your new car, or ask others how to set up your shocks. Or it is a time and place to invite that co-worker that is interested in cars to meet others with the same interests. Think of it as a time and place to come, maybe have dinner, maybe have a drink or a cookie, maybe bring the kids (of all ages) and see some car friends. It is informal. No dress code, no membership required, just a friendly smile and some car talk. The Region will offer a BIT of info IF anyone wants it or needs it. But, we promise NO BORING MEETING JUNK. Mostly it is a place to come and do a little bench racing, enjoy some friendship, maybe see an old friend or maybe even make a new friend. So come on by on the 3rd Monday of each month.
February 15, 2010
"Make it Easy, Make it Fun with STL Region SCCA" - Social, Dinner (if you chose, come right from work, Spazio's is open all afternoon). We will MAKE IT EASY with access to License questions, Hard card info, Waivers, Photos, Joining the SCCA, Getting Minor Waivers, National Convention News, Solo Novice School Info, and 100 Acre Wood Last Minute Info. We romise that we will do everything we can to MAKE IT FUN. |
from the Feb. Board Meeting
Lee Hanson Takes Job in OK. Chuck Deprow and April Schnardthorst accept his BoD and SAC duties.
Lee Hanson, Board Member at Large and Solo Advisory Committee Chairman has taken a new job in Oklahoma. This relocation forced him to resign his region positions. Lee stated "This experience goes down in my life's journal as remarkable. Thank you all". Lee's passion and energy as one of our leaders is appreciated.
Chuck DeProw was appointed to the Board of Directors to fill Lee's spot, which expires in Nov. 2010. Chuck was most recently the PDX Committee Chairman for the past several seasons and 2009 Winner of the Spirit of St. Louis Region Award. Chuck will be a great addition as a member of the Board.
April Schnardthorst has graciously offered to take the helm of the Solo Advisory Committee for 2010 for Lee. April is the current Solo Registrar and Solo Webmaster. She brings a lot of willingness to get the job done to the committee as its new leader. Lee will be attending many of the events as he plans to commute back to St. Louis on event weekends. A huge thanks to Lee for all of his work and passion for the St. Louis Solo Program. |
News from the SCCA National Convention
Three St. Louis Region Board Members represented the region at the convention for you along with several other St. Louis Region members. From the Region Board, Assistant RE, Jan Rick; Secretary, Lynn Wilson and member at large Jose Hernandez attended. Ron Ferris, National Road Rally Board; Chris Albin, Club Racing Board attended. Carla Russo attended as a speaker, along with help from Jan and Jose for the Club Racing Department. Carol Cohn, our own recipient of the Inaugural Member of Excellence of the Year Trophy last year also attended.
Seminars included many interesting informational subjects for regions, programs, leaders and members. Over 455 attend from all 113 regions in SCCA. This is a record breaking attendance.
Carla Russo led a couple of the seminars. One was on the St. Louis Region PDX Program and its incredible success. She, Jose and Jan shared the St. Louis Program with others regions. The St. Louis Region PDX program is known nationwide in SCCA for its innovative ideas, its growth and the smiles it creates with everyone involved. This seminar encouraged and promoted regions to try PDX events in their area by using the great ideas and info that was given to them in this session. Many of the attendees remarked how excited they were to take this success story and the ideas back to their own region.
Carla also led a fantastic seminar on Customer Service at SCCA events. Her training is all about how SCCA events can be better and increase entries with better customer service. Drivers/entrants are CUSTOMERS. Good customer service will increase your entries and make events better all around. Give the "Customer" more value and smiles they will be happier. They will return and tell others about the great time they had.
Of course, Carla did a wonderful job and will again present these same seminars for the Divisional Convention on Feb 20, 2010 in KC.
There were great seminars for all different kinds of programs. NWR's presented one on their Drifting program and Lynn, Jose and Carla attended and got help and ideas for the St. Louis Regions own up and coming interest in starting a drift program. Several St. Louis members gathered more info on the Street Survival Program. Some gathered info on waivers, insurance and programs at the Town Hall Sessions for each program.
Jan Rick, Assistant RE attended several sessions and got valuable info on how to increase membership, how to navigate the SCCA.com website for more info, and many other services that exist for regions and helped create a list of more that could benefit all regions, such as an email blast program that could be offered to regions to use from SCCA and save money.
There were Solo Safety Sessions. There were meetings with all the Area Directors with the RE's and Assistant RE's.
Each day was packed with seminars, meetings and of course, luncheons and award ceremonies. The awards for the Best of the Best of SCCA were applauded and presented each day at lunch. On Saturday night the convention closed with a banquet that presented the five newest Hall Of Fame Members to everyone. Our own Ron Ferris, 2010 Road Rally Program Manager for St. Louis Region won the highest Road Rally Award at the banquet. Congrats to Ron!
There is so much information available for SCCA regions and members at this convention that it takes many people to get to all the seminars offered. Jose, Lynn and Jan covered most of the sessions and gained great ideas and information for the St. Louis Region. At the Feb. Board Meeting it was decided that the Board will hold schedule a presentation for all interested region members in a few month to communicate the great info that was presented at the National Convention. Watch for news on the plans for this soon! |

SCCA Street Survival Event Chairman Needed
The Board is actively looking for a person to be Event Chairman and coordinate the efforts of the region holding a SCCA Street Survival School. The existing ones held by other clubs are sold out quickly, which seems to say the community needs more of these.
We have a list of volunteers willing to work to help, but we need a person to chair it for us and put those people to good use. Are you interested?
The Tire Rack Street Survival® Teen Driving School - Car control instruction designed to provide teen drivers with accident avoidance skills and knowledge.
It's not just about Driving, It's about Living.... · The leading cause of death among 13-19 year olds in the US is from a motor vehicle crash. · 62% of teenage passenger deaths in 2004 occurred in vehicles driven by another teenager. · Teenagers cause 2.5 million accidents per year. · In 2007 that resulted in over 6,000 deaths of teens. If you have a teen driver at home or know someone who does, then those sobering statistics should be of concern. Recent and well publicized national stories have brought to light the tragedy of teen injury and death caused by traffic accidents. The stories often mention how the teen driver "lost control and over-corrected..." causing a tragic accident of some kind.
The Tire Rack Street Survival® Teen Driving School would be a great community effort for the St.Louis Region, SCCA

We are in need of new EZ Up canopies, used on our corners at GIR.. We are currently in the process of taking stock of what we need and looking at different options of purchasing. We will probably need to buy new ones as the ones we have have been repaired numerous times and are in a state where they just can't be patched up anymore. We will probably look at buying 12 new ones. We are going to explore options of ways to subsidize the costs. Maybe there are members or their businesses that might want to purchase one and have their company name printed on it. Good advertising! STL Rally News - from the 100 Acre Wood Committee
Program Manager, Tom vanHatten:
The Rally in the 100 Acre Wood is only a few short days away. The best in American stage rallying will be in Steelville, Potosi, Viburnum and, of course, Salem MO from the 25th through 27th of February. We'd really appreciate your help in making a 2009 Rally of the Year even better in 2010! Contact Curt@100aw.org to see how you can help the rally as a volunteer, or www.100aw.org for general information on the Rally in the 100 Acre Wood. See you in a few days!

100 Acre rally race returns in Feb. |

The Rally in the 100 Acre Wood returns to the area next month, promising another exciting two days of high-quality, competitive rally car racing.
The ninth annual rally will be held Feb. 26-27 on closed county backroads in the Salem and Steelville areas. Drivers and their teams will begin arriving earlier that week to make preparations for the weekend's racing.
According to a report in The Salem News, event organizer Tom VanHatten has a positive outlook for this year's racing because Rally America has cut the number of championship rallies from nine to six. Drivers must compete in all six events in order to qualify for the national title.
The 100 Acre Wood was named co-rally of the year last year, along with the Oregon Trail Rally. VanHatten told the Salem Chamber of Commerce that it was a designation of distinction that brings more prestige to the race, more competitors and more spectators who spend money locally.
The Rally in the 100 Acre Wood is the second rally in the national championship series.
There are expected to be as many as 50 racers this year. Ken Block, winner of the last four 100 Acre Wood runs, will return this season, along with Travis Pastrana, fresh off his New Year's Eve, world record-breaking rally car jump of 274 feet.
The event starts Feb. 26 in Steelville with the first car leaving the city park at 3:30 p.m. There will be additional stops in Viburnum and Potosi before all cars return to Salem by 8:30 p.m.
Racing takes place all day on Feb. 27, after a morning public exhibition of cars.

Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you,
Happy Birthday from the STL Region SCCA,
Happy Birthday to YOU!
From the SCCA Region Relations Department
The 2010 SCCA National Convention was attended by over 450 members. For the other 99% of our members that were unable to make the trip to Las Vegas this year, we announced some changes to our 2010 Membership Programs and kicked off our 2010 Membership Drive Contest!
For starters, workers completing 12+ days this membership year will receive a $45 discount on their membership dues (up from $30 in 2009). We are also investigating adding Professional Series race days as being eligible towards days worked.
Next, effective April 1, 2010, Spouse dues will be combined into a Family Membership. The Family Membership will be reduced to $85 (from $101 in 2009). This will provide a savings of $3 for those couples that were Individual/Spouse combination members in 2009. The Individual and Spouse member will each retain their current membership number.
And finally, we launched the 2010 Membership Drive Contest. As part of this contest, the referring member discount will increase from $5 to $10. The $10 may be applied towards your membership dues or used for purchase of SCCA merchandise or event entry fees (National Office conducted events only). The second part of the contest is that for each member you refer, your name will be entered into a Grand Prize Drawing. The more referrals, the more drawing entries.
1st Place - Skip Barber Racing School
2nd Place - $1,500 Tire Rack® Gift Certificate
3rd Place - $500 SCCA Merchandise Gift Certificate
Full details of the 2010 Membership Drive Contest and 2010 Membership Programs can be found here.
We are in the process of finalizing all of the details that happen behind the scenes that make these programs available, so if you have any questions please feel free to contact us via phone or email at membership@scca.com or insideline@scca.com.
Sincerely,
Rick Myers, Region Relations Manager
