Emma Chu

Since 2007, Emma has been volunteering with the Adult Education Program, first in the New Skills Program.  Currently she assists and mentors BCNC alumni while they are at Bunker Hill Community College.  In addition to helping them with English, she coaches them in managing their academics.  One of her tutees, Wen Hui Chen received the First Literacy Scholarship award under her tutelage.  Emma also helps spread the word about BCNC - she has brought others to volunteer and work at BCNC!

Boston Public Schools adopts BCNC curriculum Parent Solutions

BCNC collaborates with Boston Public Schools and Josiah Quincy Elementary School to provide Parent Solutions, a bilingual workshop series that helps parents understand the Boston education system.  Due to the success of Parent Solutions, the Boston Public Schools now uses it as a model curriculum and it will be translated for other immigrant groups.

Norman Eng joined BCNC as the new Deputy Director.  Norman was a past participant in the Recreation and Youth program and recently worked as the Community Partnership Specialist for the 2010 Census.  Norman grew up in Castle Square in the South End, and is actively involved in Chinatown organizations and activities. He brings with him a broad range of professional experience and a commitment to BCNC and Chinatown.

NAEYCEarly Education Center received high marks and NAEYC accreditation
 

BCNC's Acorn Center for Early Education and Care was reaccredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the national program for professional standards and quality for early childhood education programs.  BCNC's center has been accredited since 2000 and the latest accreditation resulted in many high scores, including some that were 100% and high 90s.

Our graduates are moving up in the world!  Rong Fu (Eddy) Lei graduated from BCNC Adult Education in 2008, began studies at Bunker Hill with a First Literacy scholarship and expects to receive his Associate's degree in 2011. His next steps include getting a Bachelor's degree. This past summer, Eddy even participated in a summer exchange program studying Italian language and literature in Venice!

BCNC's 8-year-old Gwen Liu nabbed a spot in New England Swimming Top Ten Times list for 2009-10, 5th in 100 meter breaststroke and 6th in 100 meter butterfly for 8 year olds and younger. To honor this accomplishment she attended the New England Swimming Top Ten Banquet, featuring guest speaker Olympic Gold Medalist Cullen Jones. Gwen has been on the BCNC Swim Team, Rubber Duckies, for the past 2 years.
