 quilts

 The Harbor History Museum

Showing both historic and contemporary works "The Artistry of Quilts" includes quilts selected for display by the museum and the Gig Harbor Quilters Guild. Five members of the guild recently had their quilts chosen for display at the Association of Pacific West Quilters international juried show in Tacoma. They were Kathy Arroyo, Ken Berg, Lynn Burkhardt, Delaine Gately, and Andrea Outryve. Acclaimed quilter Delaine Gately will be sharing stories of her passion for quilts on November 19th, 1:00pm, at the museum. A self proclaimed "quilt-a-holic" Delaine Gately said of the exhibit, "When you visit the Artistry of Quilts exhibit, we want you to feel the same excitement that these quilt makers have today. We have so much available to work with, the styles and the colors...so much to tempt our imagination. This is not a dead hobby, it's alive and well. It is a true folk art."

Acclaimed author and widely recognized American Folk art expert Robert Shaw writes of quilters, "Whether they tell stories, paint pictures or combine color and pattern, the best of their quilts can capture our imaginations and touch our feelings in the same way all good art does."

Join the Harbor History Museum and the Gig Harbor Quilters Guild for this wonderful exhibit of art and history, celebrating the stories quilts tell of the fabric of our lives. Learn more at www.harborhistorymuseum.org

HOLIDAYDear    ,

November.  It's one of those weird months.  Not really fall and not really winter.  What is it?  For me it's my wedding anniversary month (29 years...not bad eh?), and of course it's the Apple Cup (November 19th). It's elections (November 8th).  And it's Turn the Clock Back (November 6th).  A special moment occurs on the calendar at 11:11am 11/11/11.  November is often a hurry up and wait month as we get ready for the holiday craziness.  It's a bit of a split personality month, a month without a theme.

As we developed this November Gigabyte this rang true through out.  Was our focus holidays?  Or was our focus fall?  Our November Gigabyte has a bit of a split personality too - the result - a bit of a mishmash of information.
Still, the month brings an eclectic mix of events and activities, some old and some new including new businesses to celebrate.  We've tried to cover it all for you in the November edition.

Our office is busy getting ready for the holidays and it's never too early to let us know about events and activities we can promote for you or your organization.  In fact, we are also busy laying out the 2012 calendar of events.  If you have an event you think we should know about for 2012, now is the time to send it in.
You can always reach me at lundl@cityofgigharbor.net

I'm spending Thanksgiving with my son in California again...I'll be thinking of you all!  I am thankful for all of you!

Sincerely,
Laureen Lund - City of Gig Harbor Marketing Director

GrapesLISTEN TO ME WINE

Ahhh, remember the days when you grabbed a box of wine for $5 bucks and you were set for the party? Yes I thought boxed wine was a great invention. Cheap and easy - but good? No. I didn't know what good wine was in those days.

I have a very distinct memory of the moment I discovered why boxed wine was $5 and a fine bottle was, well, not $5. I went for the first time to Chateau St. Michelle in Woodinville in the mid- 1980's. That day I had Cabernet Sauvignon for the first time; smooth, smokey, rich and crying out for the perfect cheese...I became a wine snob that day.

As I have "matured" so has my palette and, to be quite frank, so has my pocketbook. Good wine is now a hobby and provides great entertainment while traveling for me and my husband.  And on a couple of occasions, it has been the reason for traveling. Wine and the quest to try new varietals and wineries is a great draw for out of town visitors. And right here in Gig Harbor we have several options for visitors and locals alike.

We may not be Walla Walla, but Gig Harbor has two small and lovely wineries waiting to welcome. Olalla Valley Vineyard and Winery is situated on a promontory over looking Olalla Bay, Puget Sound and Vashon Island. The Vineyard consists of 8 acres of grape vines and berries. The Vineyard grows a variety of wine grapes. Read more...

netshedSKANSIE HOUSE & NETSHED NAMED TO NATIONAL REGISTER OF HISTORIC PLACES

City of Gig Harbor has received word that the Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation has listed the Andrew & Bertha Skansie Net Shed and House on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation said "the Skansie Net shed and House are historically significant as a direct link to the Gig Harbor's fishing industry, and for its connection to the city's Croatian heritage of many of its earliest settlers." The house and net shed join other state properties that exemplify the rich cultural heritage of Washington.

Peter Skansie immigrated to Gig Harbor from Croatia in 1886. He established a homestead and then convinced his family to join him, specifically his brothers Mitchell, Joseph and Andrew. Andrew was born in 1876, was a stone mason in Croatia, and arrived in Tacoma in 1907. He built the Skansie home in 1908, then the net shed in 1910. Wife Bertha joined Andrew in Gig harbor in 1909. Together, the Skansie brothers developed a shipyard. "The Skansie Shipyard was begun in the late 1880s and evolved into a major boat building establishment for the Puget Sound purse seine fishing fleet...The Skansie family would fish in the spring and summer and build boats in the winter."1 The Skansie family owned and maintained their original property from the late 1880s to its purchase by the City of Gig Harbor in 2002. Sons of Andrew and Bertha, Anton and Vince, maintained the property from the 1960s until its sale. The City of Gig Harbor is currently in the process of developing the net shed and surrounding property as a historic attraction, Skansie Brothers Park. Next month the net shed will undergo a restoration of the pilings and underpinnings thanks to a grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation during an American Express sponsored competition that took place throughout Western Washington in 2010. The non-profit Coastal Heritage Alliance will work with the city to provide public program and education once the net shed is stabilized for public access in 2012.

SandspitVOLUNTEERS WORK ON THE SPIT

On Saturday October 29th local Master Gardeners and volunteers planted native plants on the sandspit at the entrance to Gig Harbor bay.  This project is part of an on-going effort to re-introduce native species to the spit where the lighthouse is as part of the outfall project that took place in the summer of 2010.  A huge thank you goes out to all who helped and continue to help make this project come to life, litterally bringing life back to the spit!!  THANK YOU  to everyone!!
