Congratulations to Artondale Elementary
for their innovative lunch room recycling program, similar to successful programs at both Harbor Heights and Evergreen.  Students separate their lunchroom waste into five different containers each day, eliminating the solid waste collection by over 500 pounds per week, saving the PSD significantly in its trash pick up fees.  Students like Anna Sahlin are leading this charge, helping make a positive impact on our environment while instilling great habits in our Gig Harbor area kids.
Congratulations to everyone involved and keep up the good work.

Greetings!

Have you chosen your three?  I have.

What three locally owned businesses would you hate to see close?  What three locally owned businesses would you miss if they were gone?

Think of those three locally owned businesses.  Stop in,  Say hello.  Pick up a little something that makes you smile.  That's what keeps them around, after all.

The Gig Harbor Historic Waterfront Association has launched the newest way to help save our local businesses.  The 3/50 project.

The 3/50 project is about local residents chosing to make a difference.  This concept was started last March in Minneapolis and has generated a grassroots consumer movement in local shops from New Jersey to Arizona.  Some small businesses are claiming that  the posters and fliers promoting the 3/50 approach have saved their businesses, or at least boosted business with double digit increases in revenue and strong local following of customers.

I've been preaching this message for years, but Cinda Baxter, the creator of the 3/50 Project has finally found an incredible way to make this approach simple and doable.

Choose three local businesses you want to see survive and spend at least $50 each month at those three businesses.  $50 total, or at each business if you can.

That's all it takes.  A commitment to help save the "brick and mortars this nation was built on."

Merchants in the historic downtown waterfront district are embracing the concept and I would encourage our residents to do so as well.

Did you know for every $100 spent in an independently owned store $68 returns to your community?  In a national chain, only $43 stays here.  Spend it online and virtually NOTHING COMES HOME.

During this recession and in our changing world economy, we as individuals can truly make a change by committing to make a difference in our own community one business at a time.  Now is not the time for apathy.  Now is the time for action.

Choose three.

Spend $50.

Bring in $68

Be the One.

1968 IN AMERICA

museum1968 in America is coming to the Harbor History Museum in Gig Harbor, Washington beginning January 30, 2010. This exhibition traces the tumultuous events of 1968: a single year in history that rocked the foundations of American society. From the assassinations of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago and the Vietnam War, the extraordinary events of 1968 witnessed profound change in social and political systems and confirmed to citizens of all ages that fundamental change was both possible and necessary. The Harbor History Museum is the only scheduled venue on the entire west coast for this exhibit.

1968 in America features four major themes: the Power of Idealism, the Power of Music, the Power of the Bullet, and the Power of the Press. Visitors to the Harbor History Museum will experience a variety of artifacts including photographs, magazine covers, political memorabilia, textiles, record albums, and other sights and sounds that explore this transforming moment in American history.

"This exhibition documents a pivotal year in American history," says Dee Harris, director of visual arts and humanities at Mid-America Arts Alliance. "It's much more than a history lesson. It's a message about how the power of idealism, music, press, and the bullet made fundamental changes in our nation in 1968, setting the stage for current events that affect America today." The exhibit will also highlight Gig Harbor's transition and growth during the 1960s.

1968 in America provides a 'sneak peek' of what is in store for visitors when the museum opens later this year. Professional traveling exhibits like 1968 in America will be featured in the Special Exhibitions Gallery.

The exhibit will be open to the public Tuesday through Sunday, from January 30 through March 16, 2010 from 10 am to 4 pm.  Admission is by donation. The museum is located at 4121 Harborview Drive, Gig Harbor, Washington.  Call 253.858.6722 for more information, or visit www.harborhistorymuseum.org

The Gig Harbor Peninsula Historical Society, dba Harbor History Museum, was founded in 1963, and opened a museum in 1973. The mission of the Harbor History Museum is to create opportunities to experience the heritage of the greater Gig Harbor communities. We do this by collecting, preserving, and sharing this area's history. The museum provides a variety of public programs, exhibits, and educational outreach programs.

The exhibition is organized and toured by ExhibitsUSA, a national program of Mid-America Arts Alliance and funded in part by National Endowment for the Arts. ExhibitsUSA sends more than 20 exhibitions on tour to more than 100 small- and mid-sized communities every year. Mid-America is the oldest nonprofit regional arts organization in the United States. More information is available at www.maaa.org.

THE NETWORKED BOAT, February 20, 2010

There's a dizzying array of new electronics available for our boats-many of which are designed to connect together in a network. Networking your boat's instruments and systems can provide amazing new functionality for navigation, communication and the monitoring of your boat.  This class will introduce the world of marine networking at a practical hands-on level. We'll talk about some practical advantages of a marine network and also some of the pitfalls, including some real-world examples and troubleshooting tips. While our instructor is an electrical engineer and holds a 100-ton Near Coastal master's license, the class is designed for the average boater-not for network geeks. Scheduled for Saturday, February 20th at the Gig Harbor BoatShop, the fee for this class is $70.00/members and $80.00/non-members.  Call (253) 241-7432 for more information or to register.  www.gigharborboatshop.org
