A Gratitude List

Some people in recovery make a gratitude list every day.  I have done this on and off since the beginning of my recovery.  It really helps me to get down to the most important things in life.  For me they are always sobriety, family and friends.  I can have fun with the material things as well but they are really the icing on my gratitude cake. 

The practice of a gratitude list is not exclusive to the recovery community.  Many spiritual seekers use this technique.  Books such as The Secret by Rhonda Byrne, Thanks!: How the Science of Gratitude Can Make You Happier by Robert Emmons, and The Gratitude Attitude by J. Carl Newell all share in this philosophy. 

Many famous people have embraced living in gratitude.  Oprah Winfrey talks of "The Magic of Gratitude" while Todd Aaron Jensen writes a book on the gratitudes of Sheryl Crow, Jeff Bridges, Alicia Keys, Daryl Hall, Ray Bradbury, Anna Kendrick, B.B. King, Elmore Leonard, Deepak Chopra and 42 More.  There must be something to it!

So whether you are in the pits of chaos or sailing smoothly a gratitude list helps keep things in check.  It is a reminder from within of what is most important.  List your top three or list everything.  It does not really matter.  What does matter is getting your heart and your head in the right place.
