Dysport® vs Botox® - What's the Difference?

|  Summer is here, the weather is heating up, and everyone is sweaty, to some degree. But for some people, overactive sweat glands can be an ongoing and very embarrassing problem. Thousands of Americans suffer from a condition called hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating.
Not only is excessive sweating uncomfortable, it can severely affect everyday life. Those who suffer may not want to leave their house and go about daily life because they're afraid their sweating will kick in and completely drench them, ruining their clothes. About Dysport®
Dysport® is a non-surgical, injectable solution that works by relaxing the facial muscles, thereby reducing and smoothing away frown lines and wrinkles. Through even more studies and trials, it was found that Dysport® also worked effectively to paralyze overactive sweat glands, especially in the underarms, forehead, and hands. Essentially, Dysport® prevents nerve fiber impulses from affecting the sweat glands, kicking them into overdrive. It blocks the secretion of the chemical in the nervous system that triggers the sweat glands, thus "turning off" the sweating in the affected area.
Dysport® Sweat Reduction Procedure- Tiny amounts of Dysport® are injected directly into the area affected by excessive sweating (i.e. forehead, underarms) with a very thin needle.
- Multiple injections may be given upon your doctor's assessment of the treatment area.
- No local anesthetic is usually required, but those especially sensitive to pain can ask their doctor to numb the injection area beforehand.
- The results of the treatment will begin to appear after 3-6 days.
- Over the next 6-9 months following treatment, the treated area will be sweat-free.
There is a possibility that some sweat glands or small areas may be missed during treatment. If so, it's important to let your doctor know so that they may reevaluate the treatment areas and 'fill in' any gaps with additional injections. Patients need to know that Dysport® injections do not cure hyperhidrosis, but temporarily stop it and the symptoms will gradually return. Follow-up injections are necessary to maintain the results, at intervals varying from eight to twelve months, or sometimes longer in some patients.

DYSPORT® BEATS BOTOX® AT REDUCING CROW'S FEET
|  Move over Botox®, there's a new kid on the block when it comes to smoothing and reducing the appearance of those little annoying lines around the eyes, commonly called "crow's feet". Recent studies have shown that Dysport®, another form of the botulinum toxin type A, was chosen in a two to one preference basis over Botox® for the treatment of fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes within a 30-day, post-procedure period.
For over ten years, Botox® has been the only wrinkle relaxer on the market for cosmetic use until now. The next contender in the cosmetic wrinkle-relaxing market is Dysport®.
This newest FDA approved treatment targets those lines that appear between your eyebrows when you furrow them, such as during bouts of anger or when you're thinking really hard. Over time, these lines develop a nasty tendency to stay there, even when you aren't squinting or concentrating too hard!
What are the major differences between Dysport® and BOTOX®?
- A key difference and benefit of Dysport® over Botox® is that it works incredibly fast and has a more natural looking appearance, allowing you to make all those facial expressions without lasting wrinkles that were the goal of erasing in the first place.
- Botox® typically takes a few days to reach its full effect, while Dysport® may work sooner according to some observations.
- Many patients choose Dysport® because it will work more quickly before a party or social event.
According to the FDA's website, Dysport® stops the tightening of the facial muscles for up to 4 months. Some patients have reported that the results lasted longer though, as long as 6 months. Botox® also lasts for a few months but some patients report that Dysport® lasts a bit longer.
BOTOX® or Dysport®? Which is more cost-effective?
Dysport® is somewhat less expensive than Botox®. However, please note:
- The 'cost per unit' may differ but as the dosage is different, the number of units needed is different also.
- For many patients, pricing for both averages out to be about the same.
However, there may be a cost benefit to Dysport® for two groups of patients:
- Those who are more sensitive to it and thereby require less of the product.
- Those who notice that it lasts longer, and thereby require fewer treatments.
Dysport® does wind up being about $40-$50 less per treatment than Botox®, but for patients who've used Botox® and are pleased with the results, it usually isn't a large enough price difference to prompt them to change.
Perhaps you have been thinking of stepping up your skincare routine and anti-age maintenance program by doing some minor treatments...if so, Dysport® might be just the thing. The latest wrinkle relaxer may be the most cost-effective way to get started with your facial rejuvenation, get comfortable with procedures, and perhaps consult with a surgeon later to take further steps towards more drastic transformation.
