Combine excited first graders, accompanied by just as eager parents, along with the planning and expertise of Bahamas Educational Tours (BET) and the end result is a fun-filled one-day excursion to a Bahamian gem, Bimini.
Just over 50 persons, with an equal mixture of kids and adults, recently traveled as part of Bishop Michael Eldon School's (BMES) first grade school trip to North & South Bimini. According to BET Tour Coordinator, Michele Coburn, visits to other Bahamian islands are regular features of BMES' school curriculum and tour coordination is a service she has rendered to the institution for a number of years.

| Historic day for Tall Ship 'Alex' at her new home in the Bahamas |
The Tall Ship Alexander von Humboldt "Alex" has been steeped in history throughout her life.
Over the years she sailed the distance of 14 times around the equator. Her recent voyage brought her from Bremerhaven, Germany, where she departed January 10th of this year for her new home port Freeport Harbour.
And this past Friday marked another historic occasion that was a proud moment for the Bahamas and some very special young Bahamian people that are sharing in the Alex's new destiny! For the very first time in over 100 years the German flag was missing at the stern of the Alexander von Humboldt - she had become a Bahamian registered vessel and was sailing out of Freeport Harbour with the Bahamian maritime flag waving in the wind. 25 young men and one woman had been training for this moment for the past two weeks under very demanding German sailmasters and officers.

| Humane Society of Grand Bahama plans Peter Rose Memorial Puppylift |
Missing dog! Please keep your eyes open for Alexis - she was adopted last Friday afternoon and escaped only minutes after arriving at her new home, thanks to an improperly latched gate. Last seen off East Indiaman Road in between Sgt. Major and Balao Roads but she could be anywhere by now. If anyone sees her please call 352-2477 or 727-2477 or 727-4279. We're very worried about her and desperate to get her back.
The date for our next puppylift has been set for April 20th and we are very excited that at least 30 adult dogs plus most of our puppies will be going to rescues in Florida, Indiana and Colorado. This puppylift is going to be the Peter Rose Memorial Puppylift; as we remember and celebrate Peter's life, and mourn his passing. He and his wife Linda are long time supporters of HSGB particularly Operation Puppylift as they fervently believe, like us, that every animal is worth saving.

COLUMN: Food 99/1 Food 99/1: The fish so nice they named it twice |
As most readers of these articles know, I am an avid fisherman. I love nothing more than to be out on the water on a day off taking in the beauty of our country and taking on some of natures strongest competitors. That being said, this week we salute on of the mightiest fighting fish in the ocean. The Mahi Mahi, otherwise known as Dorado or here in the Bahamas as Dolphinfish. Strong, fast and agile with a voracious appetite, the Mahi can double in size each year of its life reaching mammoth sizes of over 100lbs. My personal biggest is a 60lb fish and let me tell you it was one of the most challenging fish of my life.
Another great characteristic of this species is it's one of the most delicious fish that swims. It can be prepared using almost any method, stays fairly firm and has wonderful flavour. It also takes to seasoning very well. Here some easy to do recipes that will let you get the most out of your weekend catch this spring.

During a special assembly, Chargé Dinkelman congratulated 11th grader Stevanno Miller on his achievement, noting that although many of the over 120 essays submitted in this year's contest highlighted the principles of justice and compassion Stevanno's essay eloquently illustrated the importance of advocating for peace in his own community.

COLUMN: Island Notes by Peter Barratt Island Notes: Copyrights and plagerism |
As you probably may or may not know there is an international convention controlling what is called 'intellectual property'. The following article discusses the subject as it applies to the written word but it also applies to inventions that carry a patent. Every week it seems, some electronics/ pharmaceutical/ automobile firm is suing another similar firm for breach of copyright. Incidentally most patents are valid for only about 15 years, then anyone is free to copy the patent.
'Intellectual property' as it applies to the written word, means that if you spend years researching some abstruse subject dealing with (say) the sexual mores of the orang outangs and publish a book on the subject, nobody can copy your work and pretend it is their own.

FEATURE STORY: Lyford Cay International School speaker series welcomes Holocaust survivor Mrs. Rena Finder |
Students at Lyford Cay International School (LCIS) were able to experience the words of Holocaust Survivor, Mrs. Rena Finder in an intimate setting on campus On March 21. Mrs. Finder agreed to meet with students as part of a new Speaker Series that LCIS has launched.
Just over 120 students and staff from Grades 6 - 9 gathered to listen to Mrs. Finder's heartbreaking story. They were moved by her descriptions of her hometown of Krakow before, during and after the Nazi Occupation.
Students were visibly moved as Mrs. Finder recalled leaving her comfortable apartment, at the age of ten, and walking the streets of Krakow and into the Jewish Ghetto. She described, with remarkable steadiness, what it was like to see so many people she knew turning away from her and her sadness when her neighbours did not answer their doors to say goodbye, but, instead watched from their widows as she and her family walked away.
Grade 8 student, Eduardo Alvarez wrote in his reflection piece "At the age of ten, I was in school learning and having fun with friends. At the age of ten Mrs. Finder ... was forced to hide from Nazis."
