COLUMN: Island Notes by Peter Barratt
Island Notes: The Port Authority goes shopping

This article perhaps helps to explain what happened in Freeport immediately after majority rule in the Bahamas. It wasn't only the much quoted 'bend or break' speech that scared the Port Authority and its licensees, there were many other signs that things were about to change most important of which was the change in immigration procedures.

After the change of government it was clear to the Port Authority it would not be 'business as usual'. Groves had stepped down from being CEO and some American managers were brought in who acted as if they were still in Boise, Idaho. The Port by this time had become a public company on the New York Stock Exchange merging with Benguet a gold mining company in the Philippines.

The watchword was now 'diversification' and for a time, for me at least, it had a short term benefit. The new company now went shopping for overseas 'projects'. I was sent on a mission with Doug Silvera to look at land in California for possible purchase.

    GRAND BAHAMA NEWS

Skyler Ferguson-Bain becomes an angel to the GB Children's Home

Nine year old Skyler Ferguson-Bain is becoming quite the angel to the Grand Bahama Children's Home this Christmas.

Seeing a post on her mom's Facebook page about Furniture Plus' fundraising efforts on Grand Bahama for the Home, Skyler decided to lend a hand. As a part of the store's "Charity of Hope Campaign," Furniture Plus' staff are selling paper 'Angels' to hang on their trees and Bahamian candles to support their store's chosen charity. In addition to these sales, Furniture Plus then matches - dollar for dollar - the amount raised from those sales.

"My daughter thought this was a great way to help the Home and asked if she could sell the angels too," said her mother, Ms. Stephanie Ferguson.

They partied like animals to benefit the potcakes [photos]

Grand Bahama's newest hot spot Roosters played host to animal lovers who 'partied like animals' to benefit the Humane Society of Grand Bahama's Pawa-A-Palooza fundraiser on October 22nd.

Welcomed with a Hawaiian lei at the entrance by volunteer Gloria McGlone, the joint was jumping with the return of the 'Straight Up' band and guest vocalist Joanna Llambias. The silent auction was packed with eager bidders and the delicious homemade food by Beth and Barbara was going fast and furious. Locals had a ball enjoying the night's entertainment at the new location for an HSGB fundraiser.

First in the series of showings was a visit to St. Paul's Methodist College, where Ginger Moxey, GBPA-Vice President, introduced the pictorial overview to the entire primary school body. "The presentation that you are about to view tells the story of this wonderful city which we call home. It takes you on a journey of its history and development and shows how a once barren pine forest became everything we see and experience around us every day."

She's the winner for just stopping by

Ending work on Saturday, October 29th, Stephanie Small thought she'd have a quick look at the Auto Show event on her way home. As she went from tent to tent she was reminded to enter to win the washing machine being given away by Furniture Plus of Grand Bahama.

"I never thought I'd win," said Small. "I was thinking I might discuss buying a car with my husband. This is so amazing and I think I've seen a car I like too!" Mrs. Small won a Kenmore energy saver washing machine which was delivered to her home this week.

Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival shines a spotlight on Grand Bahama

The inaugural year of FLIFF on Location: Grand Bahama Island was a resounding success! The initiative started a year ago when Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival (FLIFF) was invited to screen Beneath the Blue in Freeport at the Regency Theatre during their 25th festival season in 2010. This sparked the idea of having an "On Location" 4-day segment for Grand Bahama Island.

A team of people from various walks of life were called to the Grand Bahama Ministry of Tourism offices to help get the plan in motion. The result was a well-run and highly appreciated festival by Bahamians, visiting tourists, actors and filmmakers who came from as far away as Australia to enjoy film and camaraderie while taking in the unique location of Grand Bahama Island.

    FEATURE STORY:
Old Bahama Bay owners clarify the situation on land ownership and responsibilities in West End developments

Seeing tremendous growth and development potential, the resort property owner and developer in West End, Grand Bahama, Lubert Adler's Old Bahama Bay resort (OBB Resort) property continues to lay the groundwork for productive and effective relationships with key stakeholders in the area.

Properties surrounding some of those owned by OBB Resort have been the focus of recent foreclosure actions, primarily those residential properties now under control of G-LA Resorts Holdings (Bahamas), Limited. The OBB Resort properties have been unaffected by these actions, as they were outside of the loan default that caused the residential sectors to be recently transferred to new owners.

OBB Resort is the owner of 225 acres of the prime resort and commercial property in West End. The new golf course property is also part of the OBB Resort land, adding another 294 acres to their total resources.

Senior Project Manager Derek Gape explained where the OBB Resort sectors lie: "The familiar Old Bahama Bay resort property, including the water and sewerage systems, marina, and running along the north shore to the West End settlement, all of the new golf course which surrounds the airport and extends along the new canal systems, and the large central future resort land that includes a stretch of prime beach. This last portion," Mr Gape said, "is the image that so many people have seen in artist renditions of the high-rise hotel, casino and commercial development planned for that area."

While the OBB Resort property may be smaller in total acreage than that of its neighbours, its significance and potential is tremendous.
