Governor Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village
Grand Reopening Day of Celebration May 12, 2012 10:00am - 4:00pm
The Governor Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village was donated to Baylor University in 1985 by the Daniel Family. The structures were relocated from Liberty, Texas to Baylor's campus in 1986, where they now reside along the banks of the Brazos River as part of the Mayborn Museum Complex. Over the past year, the historic village has undergone a major revitalization in order to fully integrate the historic village into the museum's public programming and increase the diversity of experiences offered to the museum's visitors. The newly renovated Governor Bill and Vara Daniel Historic Village will reopen on May 12, 2012.
Begin your visit by exploring a new exhibit on the life of Governor Bill Daniel. Two large touch screen kiosks help visitors learn about the Daniel family and the fascinating story of how the historic village came to be a part of Baylor University. An interactive orientation map describes the visitor's experience once they step outdoors.
The historic village provides guests with a glimpse into the past, bringing to life a community in the 1890s. During your exploration of the village discover how folks lived, from the cook to the blacksmith to the wife of the planter. Spend time in an 1890s one-room schoolhouse and read from a McGuffey Eclectic Reader. Visit the commissary to experience what shopping was like during this period. Enjoy a moment of silent reflection in the community church. Utilize the cellphone tours and building guides to enrich your experience.
Demonstrations and activities that reflect life in the 1890's, such as school yard games and washing clothes, will be offered on opening day.

June 23, 2012 - September 23, 2012
Join the Mayborn Museum Complex this summer as we combine two exhibits that explore Maya culture.

The Mystery of the Mayan Medallion
An archeological team has mysteriously disappeared from a dig site in Palenque, Mexico. They had been investigating a long-standing rumor that a priceless jade medallion is buried in the temple there. However, something horrifying has scared them off. Luckily, in their haste to escape, they managed to leave behind a video with clues and a warning to all who come after.
Museum visitors must uncover the mystery of the dig site and find the priceless treasure.

Painted Metaphors
The great Maya creation story, the Popol Vuh, sanctified the mountains, caves, and rivers of the Alta Verapaz of today's Guatemala. The University of Pennsylvania's Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology's collection of Chamá vessels shows how objects reflect cultural shifts and how people cope with change. Nineteen Chamá polychrome ceramics are accompanied by more than 100 objects illustrating Maya daily life, religious ritual, and shifts in rulership. This is a traveling exhibit of unsurpassed beauty and archaeological significance.
